Manchester United may need to give Adrien Rabiot assurances on the future of Cristiano Ronaldo before a deal for the midfielder can be finalised.
The MEN broke the news on Monday that United have agreed a fee in principle with Juventus of £15million rising to £20million for the 27-year-old but still have to negotiate personal terms with the player's agent – his mother. The potential deal for the midfielder is the clearest indication yet that a move for Frenkie de Jong may be a step too far for United to complete this transfer window.
The club have not completely ruled out a move for the Dutchman yet, but are starting to prepare for the eventuality that De Jong stays at Barcelona and are therefore lining up alternative midfielders. Rabiot is in the last year of his contract at Juventus and the Italian club have heavily reinforced their midfield over the last year with the signings of Manuel Locatelli, Denis Zakaria and Paul Pogba.

It is understood that United lined up a move for Rabiot prior to the morale-shattering defeat to Brighton and that it is not a knee-jerk reaction to the opening-day disappointment. One of the main talking points following the match was Ronaldo's appearance on the substitute bench as he failed to make Erik ten Hag's starting XI.
Rabiot and Ronaldo were teammates at Juventus and it appears that United may need to resolve the 37-year-old's future should they want the Frenchman to join the club this transfer window. The midfielder revealed that the Portuguese international played a role in convincing him to sign for Juventus when he joined the club three years ago.
Speaking in 2019 after arriving at the Serie A club, he said:
