If he steps down then there are a number of contenders who could replace him, however there isn't a stand out candidate among the Tory MPs to take them into the local elections later this year.

The Chancellor is often mentioned when the conversation about who the next Prime Minister should be.
Following Johnson's apology for attending a party in Downing Street in May 2020 at Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday the Cabinet rallied round him to offer their support.
Sunak, who spent the day 200 miles away in Devon, took eight hours to tweet his response to the apology from the PM and it wasn't overly supportive.
He tweeted: "I’ve been on a visit all day today continuing work on our #PlanForJobs as well as meeting MPs to discuss the energy situation.
"The PM was right to apologise and I support his request for patience while Sue Gray carries out her enquiry."
