After being postponed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 Olympics are finally kicking off in Tokyo this week.
Anticipation is mounting in Japan ahead of a stripped-back official opening ceremony on Friday (July 23), which will take place in a virtually empty national stadium.
The event was postponed in March 2020 as countries faced strict lockdowns to try and slow the spread of Covid-19.

For the first time ever in the history of the Olympic Games, Quinn, a transgender and non-binary athlete, has won a gold medal. Quinn has become the only such athlete to ever take home any medal in the Games. Quinn, 25, was part of the Canadian women’s football team, that beat Sweden 3-2 in the women’s football final to take gold on Friday night. Quinn, a midfielder, was also part of the bronze medal winning Canadian team at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Simone Biles‘ Olympic journey may not be over just yet. While mental health struggles caused the 24-year-old gymnast to sit out of most of the Tokyo Olympics, aside from the balance beam final where she won bronze, Simone said she is “keeping the door open” to possibly compete in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
