The new series of The Crown is just weeks away, and fans are gearing up for what promises to be a rollercoaster season for Netflix’s flagship royal drama. The series explores the life and reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and its fifth and penultimate season follows the royal family during one of their most turbulent decades in modern times, the 1990s.
The Crown season five will feature an all-new and all-star cast of veteran actors and exciting newcomers, as Harry Potter and Game of Thrones stars are handed the reins amid another complete cast overhaul. The show has attracted some controversy in recent weeks, as its upcoming season will be the first to air following the deaths of Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Some critics and commentators feel the new series comes too soon following the monarch’s death on September 8, while others – including former Prime Minister John Major, who will feature in the series – has slammed its depiction of fictional events. Regardless, The Crown is a big hit for Netflix, with the show recording an 800 percent increase in its UK viewership in the days immediately following the Queen’s death, according to a report from data analytics firm Whip Media.
