The Met Gala officially marks the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. After photos are taken on the red carpet, a cocktail party ensues where guests are met with a receiving line of selected individuals to guide them throughout the exhibition.
Long-serving honorary chairs for the evening are fashion designer Tom Ford, Instagram head Adam Mosseri and, of course, Conde Nast’s empress, Anna Wintour. The dress code for this year’s Met Gala is Gilded Glamour. Inspired by the era lasting roughly from 1870 to 1900, the Gilded Age in America saw a period of rapid economic growth, creating a wealth of ‘new money’ – while also sending others into abject poverty.
The era was recently dramatised in HBO’s The Gilded Age, starring Cynthia Nixon and Christine Baranski. The theme should provide rich inspiration for the stars to go all out in delivering extravagant and exquisite looks.
