In 2018, Savanna Darnell was living a dream shared by so many of her generation - she had been selected from thousands to be a star of ITV’s popular dating show Love Island. Young, and bubbling with excitement at the time, Savanna, now 26, changed her whole life in anticipation. Sadly things didn’t work out quite the way she hoped.
Of course ITV have a well publicised Duty of Care to all those who take part, to ensure they're supported before, during and after filming the show, and Savanna was offered the same care as her fellow contestants. Here, she tells her story and shares some wise advice for this year's Love Island wannabes... “I let Love Island takeover my whole life that year – I gave up so much.
But I guess I was just a naïve 21 year old back then. It all began quite innocently. In March 2018, my phone pinged with an Instagram message from a name I didn’t recognise.They said I’d be a great candidate for a popular dating show.They didn’t name the show, but they didn’t need to - I knew exactly what it was," recalls Savanna.
I didn’t devote that much time to my social media as I was busy with my musical theatre career so I was quite surprised Love Island had found and chosen me. I’d never considered doing TV before, but when the idea is presented to you it’s hard to not get excited, especially as I’d been a big fan of the show for years. I called the number they provided and arranged for my first meeting at the ITV head office a few weeks later.
It all got pretty intense after that. I was meeting with various producers, and having conversations with them about my life including my romantic history. They were all telling me constantly how much they loved me, how amazing I was going to be, and how they appreciated
