Phoebe Bridgers appeared in court in LA yesterday to try to convince a judge to dismiss a defamation lawsuit brought against her by sound engineer Chris Nelson last year.Nelson sued Bridgers last September claiming that, in October 2020, the musician posted and promoted various defamatory statements against him on Instagram. In her post, Bridgers made a number of allegations of abuse and misconduct against Nelson, as well as directing her followers to his ex-girlfriend’s account on the social platform where further allegations had been made – including that he had murdered a man in a racially motivated attack.In his lawsuit, Nelson claims that Bridgers “intentionally used her high-profile public platform on Instagram to publish false and defamatory statements … in order to destroy his reputation”.But she says that she believes the statements she made were true, insisting that they were based on “my personal knowledge, including statements I personally heard Mr Nelson make, as well as my own observations”.Bridgers is trying to have the defamation lawsuit dismissed by citing anti-SLAPP rules, those being rules designed to stop people limiting the free speech of others through unwarranted litigation.Although no ruling on the matter was made, Judge Curtis Kin said that he was inclined to grant Bridgers’ motion to dismiss yesterday, according to Courthouse News, adding: “It seems like a he said/she said issue.

Rina Sawayama has shared the music video for her latest single ‘Hold The Girl’.The Ali Kurr-directed visuals show the pop star stuck in a time loop within the bounds of a 19th century farmhouse until she finally breaks free.Press material describes the video as a “metaphor for Rina’s emotional breakthrough in therapy, which sparked her to write the song” for her second album of the same name, which is released on September 16 (pre-order here).Speaking about the new single, Sawayama said: “’Hold the Girl’ was the first song I wrote for the record at the end of 2020 – I had gone to therapy and had a revelation, so I decided to write this song…that was the start of it. I was crying before going into the studio to write about it.”The song follows recent singles ‘Catch Me In The Air’ and ‘This Hell’.

Rina Sawayama has shared the third single and title track from her highly-anticipated second album ‘Hold The Girl’.The artist has already previewed the new album – the follow-up to 2020’s ‘SAWAYAMA’, which NME awarded five stars – with the singles ‘This Hell’ and ‘Catch Me In The Air’, with the latter premiering as Zane Lowe’s New Music Daily pick on Apple Music 1.The new single is a typically ambitious, multi-faceted pop song, addressing both the trauma and catharsis of moving forward in life. “Sometimes I just wanna run away, leave behind that old me, start again/ Then I’ll remember who I’m really made of/ And she’s been hide-and-seeking, waiting all alone,” she sings on the track.Speaking about the songwriting process, Sawayama said: “‘Hold the Girl’ was the first song I wrote for the record at the end of 2020 – I had gone to therapy and had a revelation, so I decided to write this song… that was the start of it.
