‘War Pony’ Directors Riley Keough, Gina Gammell Talk Cannes Premiere, Making Art and Seeing Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Elvis’

Elvis’ granddaughter, Riley Keogh, took the stage on Sunday during the MTV Movie & TV Awards to present a sneak peek of the upcoming Baz Luhrmann biopic about the King of Rock & Roll. Riley reflected on her grandfather's legacy as she took the stage during the awards to share a never-before-seen clip of the film.

The Real has finally arrived, and it comes during a time in which the daytime talk show space is experiencing surprising cancellations. The syndicated show's conclusion may be sad for fans but, at the very least, the hosts were able to provide a proper farewell. After eight seasons on the air, the hosts got to reflect on the talk show ending.

Kasia Gallanio died at the age of 45. According to reports, Gallanio was found at her home in Marbella, Spain, by the local police.

“War Pony” wins Palm Dog AwardBrit the Silver Poodle, who stars in Riley Keough and Gina Gammell’s indigenous drama “War Pony,” took home the coveted Palm Dog collar, according to the Hollywood Reporter.The Palm Collar is awarded to the best performance by a canine or group of canines during the festival. The award consists of a leather dog collar with the term “PALM DOG.”Steve Pond, in his review of “War Pony” wrote, “Set on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota and co-written, co-produced and starring members of the Native American community, “War Pony” is unhurried, naturalistic and heartbreaking, taking its rhythms from the lives of characters in a situation where the lack of options can lead to desperation or to resignation.

Cannes Film Festival.Members of the production team for “Butterly Vision,” by Ukrainian director Maksym Nakonechni, protested the ongoing war in Ukraine while on the red carpet Wednesday.In front of Salle Debussy, the second-largest theater in Cannes, the team — including producers Darya Bassel and Yelizaveta Smit, plus actress Rita Burkovska — held a banner that read, “Russians kill Ukrainians. Do you find it offensive or disturbing to talk about this genocide?”The sirens heard on the red carpet stairs were meant to symbolize air raids in Ukraine, while the protestors held signs that read “sensitive content” over their faces.Not only were they demonstrating the ongoing devastation in Ukraine, but they were also attempting to show the extent of Russian censorship.The film “Butterfly Vision” explores a similar idea, albeit in a fictional world.

Elvis Presley, has spoken about the “emotional experience” of watching Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis at Cannes Film Festival.“It’s very intense to watch when it’s your family,” the actor/director told Variety. “The first movie I ever watched in the theater and said I wanted to make movies was ( Luhrmann’s) Moulin Rouge when I was 12. It was a real honour to know Baz was doing this movie.

CANNES, France -- South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation has often been depicted in film but rarely from the inside. The Cannes Film Festival entry “War Pony," though, sought to capture daily life on the reservation by relying on the perspectives of its Native American residents.The film was directed by the actor Riley Keough and her friend, Gina Gammell.

Matt Donnelly Senior Film WriterA group of women protestors staged a dramatic scene at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday, releasing plumes of smoke from handheld devices and displaying a long banner for the global press.At the premiere of “Holy Spider,” director Ali Abbasi’s female-centered thriller, roughly 12 women in formalwear gathered on the famed stairs of the festival’s Grand Palais with raised fists — filling the space with thick black smoke and holding a long scroll of women’s names.Security seemed unfazed by the event, allowing the protestors to be filmed and photographed. One insider close to the production said the protest was not a coordinated stunt to promote the film, about a journalist who travels to the Iranian holy city of Mashhad to investigate a serial killer murdering sex workers.

CANNES – It may seem obvious, but sometimes combining two compelling stories doesn’t lead to an overall more captivating film. That’s the primary takeaway from Gina Gammell and Riley Keough‘s somewhat messy “War Pony,” which debuted at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival this weekend.

Baz Luhrmann’s new biopic “Elvis” will certainly prove to be emotional for the late King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s millions of fans, and was even more so for his granddaughter, actress Riley Keough.
