John Hopewell Chief International Correspondent As free-to-air operators’ ratings tumbled last decade, Alex Pina seized the chance to make two YA-targeted shows at Spain’s Atresmedia, firing up their ambitions: “Locked Up” and “Money Heist.” Now Marc Cistaré – a main writer on early Pina shows “Paco’s Men”and “The Boat” over 2005-13 and a scribe on “Locked Up” – has seized another industry opportunity, the strategic co-production alliance between TelevisaUnivision’s ViX streaming service and The Mediapro Studio. Rolling off the hiked ambitions of Spain’s TV scene after streamer success, he has created“Las Pelotaris, 1926,” which The Mediapro Studio Distribution is bringing onto the market at this week’s MipTV.
A ViX Original, airing from March 10 on its platform as part of its premium offer, the show combines the craft learnt from two decades of writing Spanish prime-time series and the larger canvas, gender focus and artistic boldness of contemporary scripted. Sold outside Latin America and the U.S. by The Mediapro Studio Distribution, which these days means a lot in terms of profile at Cannes TV markets, the series weighs in as one of the market’s big Spanish-language bets and one of the only big Latin American plays at the MipTV. Created by Cistaré, and co-written with Spain’s Adriana Rivas (“Locked Up”) and Javier Naya (“The Boat”) and Mexico’s Anaí López (“Ana”), “Las Pelotaris, 1926” is directed by Jesús Rodrigo (“Locked Up”) and Jacob Santana (“Paco’s Men”). Set between Spain’s Basque Country and Mexico, it kicks off with a black-and-white prologue in the Basque Country in 1915 as a voiceover explains that back then kids didn’t have video games nor social media but they did have walls, and played pelota. became a cultural phenomenon when it was first released in theaters in 1987, Paramount+ is revisiting the erotic thriller starring Michael Douglas and Glenn Close by expanding it into an eight-part series, with Joshua Jackson and Lizzy Caplan taking over the main roles. Adapted by creator Alexandra Cunningham, who also serves as the showrunner, the series also stars Amanda Peet, Alyssa Jirrels, Toby Huss, Reno Wilson and Brian Goodman, who all spoke to ET about this modern take on the now-classic but complicated tale about an affair gone wrong. «It's a reimagining of the original 1987 movie,» Peet says, acknowledging that not only does the series make some adjustments to key characters, but it expands upon the themes and overall world that were touchstones of the 119-minute film. She adds that Cunningham had the difficult task of «letting herself be awed by the film not enough» that she couldn't go beyond the original story. «I feel like our story, that's our jumping off point.

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic In the four days since announcing U2’s first dates for a limited engagement at the massive new Sphere in Las Vegas, the number of shows has incrementally expanded. The mere five gigs announced on Monday got stretched to a dozen shows as of Wednesday, and now, come Thursday morning, five more were added, to make it 17 concerts going on sale this week. But if you must see this show, don’t sleep on these 17 dates under the assumption that the band will just keep adding more extensions. The extension through Nov. 4 that was announced Thursday could well represent the end of the run, since, in an earlier interview with Variety, the Edge said the band would likely be limited to six weeks in the venue — and that’s just how far these new dates take it.
Brent Lang Executive Editor During the pandemic, studios experimented with shrinking the amount of time that their films screened exclusively in cinemas, while spending oceans of money to launch streaming services. But the debt they racked up has sent their share prices plummeting and, now, studios are making more movies for theaters and cutting back on their streaming budgets. CinemaCon, the annual exhibition industry showcase that is unfolding this week in Las Vegas, couldn’t be happier about the shift in strategy. John Fithian, the head of the National Association of Theatre Owners, the trade group behind the show, touted the new state of play during his speech to the convention, while praising Apple and Amazon for embracing the big screen with movies like “Air” and the upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon.” Both of these companies will reportedly spend more than $1 billion on theatrical films.
In a week when distributors and exhibitors are reconvening for their annual Las Vegas meet-up, CinemaCon, and celebrating the post-pandemic resurge of the box office, the motion picture industry is bracing for a potential WGA strike.
Marta Balaga Everyone is a “Prisoner” in a new DR Drama series created by Kim Fupz Aakeson, just shown at Canneseries. Not just the inmates crammed inside an old Danish prison, but the people who guard them as well. “Twenty years ago, I wrote a Dogme film [‘In Your Hands’] that also took place in prison. I became interested in these guards, because who takes on that job? Who walks into such a hostile environment every day, unarmed?!,” he wonders. The characters – played by “The Killing” star Sofie Gråbøl, David Dencik, Charlotte Fich and Youssef Wayne Hvidtfeldt as Sammi, an ambitious rookie – have to watch their backs. But frustrated criminals are not their biggest problem: it’s the system itself, which leaves them powerless.
Craig Mazin, co-creator, executive producer, writer and director of HBO smash The Last of Us, says there remains “quite a bit of story to tell” in the video game adaptation. “Our plan is to do it not just for one more season,” he said. “We should be around for a while.”
