UK Covid cases up by more than 50,000 for 6th day running as infections double in a week

Coronavirus cases are up by more than 50,000 today - double last Sunday's increase. A further 454 deaths have been announced this afternoon, alongside 54,990 new infections.

It is the sixth consecutive day on which the number of new cases has been above 50,000. Britain recorded 30,501 infections last Sunday as the new highly infectious strain of coronavirus spread across the country.
