Married to Their Work: Samuel L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson Jackson on Bringing ‘The Piano Lesson’ Back to Broadway

Brent Lang Executive Editor Samuel L. Jackson had his marching orders. So when actor John David Washington approached him for tips about playing Boy Willie, a role Jackson originated in the 1987 production of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson,” he clammed up. “I was specifically told by the director not to give him advice,” Jackson says. “John David asked several times, but when he realized that I was not allowed to help him, he stopped asking.” The director, in this case, is LaTanya Richardson Jackson, who also happens to be Jackson’s wife, as well as the first woman to oversee a production of Wilson’s work on Broadway. The two are teaming up on the hotly anticipated revival of the classic drama, only this time Sam is playing Boy Willie’s uncle, Doaker Charles. It marks his first time on Broadway since 2011’s “The Mountaintop,” in which he played Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and LaTanya’s  first time directing after a run of acclaimed stage performances, including the 2014 revival of “A Raisin in the Sun” and 2018’s “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

‘She Said’ Writer Spent Days With Harvey Weinstein Survivors and Received Book Chapters in Real Time to Pen Screenplay

Manori Ravindran International Editor “She Said” screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz has said the New York Times journalists who broke the Harvey Weinstein story in 2017 fed her chapters of their book as they were writing it in order to bring the novel to screen sooner. Speaking as part of a Variety-sponsored London Film Festival panel on screenwriting, the British scribe of such films as the Keira Knightley-fronted “Colette” and Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Ida” described working closely with reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey to write Universal’s film adaptation of their 2019 book. The process took around four years, said Lenkiewicz. “I started working on it before I read the book,” said the Devon-born writer, who had six “freeing” weeks of writing on her own before even getting sight of a chapter.

Loretta Lynn, Coal Miner’s Daughter Turned Country Superstar, Dies at 90

Chris Morris Music Reporter Loretta Lynn, who rose from an impoverished childhood in Kentucky’s coal fields to become a pioneering female star of country music, has died. She was 90. According to a statement from her family shared with Variety, Lynn died Tuesday in her home in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. Memorably portrayed in an Oscar-winning turn by Sissy Spacek in the 1980 biopic “Coal Miner’s Daughter” (drawn from Lynn’s bestselling 1976 autobiography, co-authored by George Vecsey), Lynn was one of the first women to rise to stardom as a country vocalist. In all, she charted 51 top-10 country singles.

Bill Nighy on the Oscar Buzz Surrounding ‘Living’: ‘I Don’t Get Out Much’

Brent Lang Executive Editor For Bill Nighy, the road to a character’s heart runs through his tailor. “The clothes govern how you move, how you think and how you feel,” he says. In the case of “Living,” the story of Mr. Williams, a bureaucrat in 1953 London grappling with a fatal illness, the meant donning a bespoke pin-striped suit. But he struggled with the wide shoulders that were the fashion of that era. “I didn’t think I had the frame to pull it off,” Nighy says. And there was one feature that was particularly burdensome. “I had to wear a bowler hat, and they are absolutely bizarre,” muses Nighy. “How they caught on, I’ll never know. If a brick fell on your head from a very great height, you’d be fine. If you fell off a horse or a motorbike, you’d emerge unscathed. You could go to war with that hat on and be well protected.”
