A horror crash on a Scots road has left one person dead and another in hospital after two cars careered into the River Dee on Monday morning. Emergency services are currently at the scene on the A93 at Aboyne.
The 19-year-old male driver of an Audi involved tragically died at the scene following the incident, which took place around 8.05am. A second man, 19, who was the driver of the Volkswagen Golf, was airlifted to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness for treatment to injuries and their condition is described as stable.
Specialist fire, coastguard and ambulance crews rushed to the incident. A helicopter search unit also scoured the scene and the river bank was searched by mountain rescue teams.
Photographs from the scene show two vehicles, one dark coloured and one red, submerged in the icy water after the crash while a major emergency presence can be seen on the road above.
A police diversion is in place on the B976 and B9158 as the A93 road between Aboyne and Dinnet remains closed in both directions.
Sergeant Eoin Maxwell from the Divisional Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died.
“Our investigation is at an early stage and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the crash take place, who has not yet spoken to police, to contact us. We are also keen to obtain any dashcam from motorists driving on the road around the time of the crash.
“We would like to thank the members of the public who assisted at the scene of the crash this morning.
