A good night's sleep is essential for both physical and mental health. Likewise, a night of poor sleep can set your day off on the wrong foot.
While some toss and turn in the bed, others have favored positions and may be wondering if those positions are beneficial. To find out, Furniture Village, one of UK’s biggest furniture retailers set out to reveal the nation's sleeping habits.
They also consulted their their sleep ambassador, former NHS clinician and celebrity dancer on Strictly, Dr Ranjit "Ranj" Singh . The TV doctor shared his expertise, discussing each sleeping position and both their benefits and drawbacks.
They found that out of the three most popular sleeping positions, sleeping on the back is the most searched option online, a record that remained undefeated in the past three years. Side sleeping searches come in second according to the latest data and the least favourite position appears to be sleeping on your front.
While popularity may suggest that you're better off on your back, the ‘best’ position to sleep in comes down to individual preference. Dr Ranj has said that each positions have their own pros and cons.
The TV doctor explained: “Contrary to popular opinion, there isn’t a specific position that is unanimously recommended by health professionals and experts. This is because there is actually very little good quality research looking at this.”
However, he recommends listening to expert opinions, which generally agree that the best position is one that achieves three main things:
1) Keeps the spine (from hips to head) in a neutral alignment
2) Reduces pressure on pressure points (bits of the body that tend to ‘stick out’)
3) Doesn’t aggravate any existing medical conditions.
