A woman was found dead at a former YMCA just two days after her birthday, an inquest has heard.
Cheryl Burton, who had been living at the hostel for six months, left notes in her room after struggling with drugs and abusive relationships throughout her life.
Assistant coroner, Jane Eatock, presiding at Cleethorpes Town Hall inquest, concluded that the 39-year-old's death was suicide after reading the messages written by the mum-of-two.
A quantity of cocaine was also found in her body during a post mortem examination, Grimsby Live reports.
Cheryl had been out celebrating her 39th birthday with friends on November 3, 2020, however had not been seen by any YMCA staff the following day.
They checked her room, where curtains were pulled shut and the room in darkness. But they could not see her.
The following day, November 5, another routine check was made and the tragic death discovered. She had a cardboard cut out cross under her top, the inquest heard.
Her family from Scunthorpe attended the hearing to pay tribute to Cheryl.
Her sister Mary Wraith said they had a "fun childhood growing up together" and remembered her sister, nine years her elder, as "loud and gobby."
She said: "They were happy times. things got difficult when she became a teenager and she became pregnant at 15 or 16 years old. She was supported by the family and she coped very well."
She told how a couple of years later Cheryl's second child arrived. Both were later taken into care at the ages of six and four years after the mother became addicted to Class A drugs.
The sister said there were times when Cheryl beat her addiction and came off drugs. During one of her relapses she dropped to just four and a half stones in weight.
