Locals in the Angus town of Monikie have slammed thugs who are thought to have burned down play equipment and a birdwatching hut at a local park.
Emergency services were called to Monikie Country Park, just a few miles from Dundee, in the early hours of Monday morning following reports of structures ablaze. Swings and a twitchers' hide are among the equipment that has been destroyed, with no estimate yet available for how much they will cost to replace.
Police Scotland has launched an investigation into the fires, which they are treating as wilful. They have urged locals who may have doorbell or CCTV footage to examine it closely and get in touch.
Residents of the quiet Angus village have hit out at those responsible for the destruction of the equipment at the park, which is regularly used by locals from across the county and Dundee.
One said on social media: "Just visited the Country Park for the first time in ages, just seen the playpark in the woods, the old tunnel structure and tyre swings burnt away - smells relatively fresh too - massive shame."
Another added: "So angry this morning! The bird hide on the path down from the Rangers office has been burnt to the ground! What is wrong with people?"
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers received reports of a wilful fire raising at Monikie Country Park around 3:45am on Monday 4 July, 2022. Enquiries are currently ongoing.
"It’s possible that residents living around the park may have CCTV including Ring doorbell and car dash camera footage and we would appeal for any witnesses or anyone with information to contact Police Scotland on 101 and quote reference number 0352 from 4 July 2022. Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
