Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic The upcoming Apple TV+ competition series “My Kind of Country,” executive-produced by Kacey Musgraves and Reese Witherspoon, is not just going to be a genre-specific knockoff of “American Idol” or “The Voice,” it’s clear from a first trailer released Friday. (Watch the new preview, below.) NBC, ‘People’s Choice Awards’ Create Separate Country Music Show

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Country music is about to get its fourth major annual awards show. NBCUniversal announced Thursday that a program honoring country’s most popular artists will be spun off from its “People’s Choice Awards,” with a two-hour telecast dubbed “People’s Choice Country Awards” set to debut in September on the NBC broadcast network and the Peacock streaming service. The host venue for the event will be Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House, which was used as a location by the Academy of Country Music Awards for a couple of years during the pandemic but has never been the principal ongoing location for any kudocasts in the past. The partnership is a result of the Opry’s parent company, Ryman Hospitality Properties, having struck a deal in April 2022 to sell a 30% stake in its entertainment operations to NBC Universal and the investment firm Atairos.

Rosalía’s Motomami Concert Recreated by YouTuber in Peru After Her Tour Skipped the Country

Thania Garcia It’s always a bummer when an in-demand artist skips your city while on tour. Such was the case for Peru, who missed out on Rosalía’s highly acclaimed “Motomami” trek that hit 15 countries throughout the latter half of last year. However, the city of Lima decided to take the matter into its own hands, putting together its own variation of the pop spectacle for a roaring crowd of eager concert-goers. The ringleader behind the tribute is Peruvian YouTuber iOA, who in an Instagram post, shared the show was to be filmed for his channel and had taken four months of rehearsals to put together. Dubbed the “El Miji Show,” the concert replicated much of the tour’s elaborate production including costume changes, lighting, stage design and choreography. On stage, iOA and his “Motopapis” lip-synced and performed the Spanish singer’s setlist which included “Saoko,” “Motomami,” and “La Combi Versace,” among others.

CMA Triple Play Awards Honor Country’s Most Prolific No. 1 Songwriters, Including Father/Son Team Thomas Rhett and Rhett Akins

Neil Pond It all begins with a song. That’s the time-honored country music mantra, an acknowledgment that all hit tunes start with words and music steeped in the blood, sweat and tears of songwriters. And it was ringing out loud and clear at the Country Music Association’s Triple Play Awards Wednesday night at Saint Elle in Nashville. The Triple Play Awards recognize songwriters who’ve notched three No. 1 hits in a 12-month period based on Billboard and Country Aircheck charts tracking radio play, streaming services and album sales. Sixteen winners were announced at this year’s ceremony, for a total of 17 awards, since the famously prolific Ashley Gorley got two Triple Plays for his six No. 1 songs for the year. Additionally, song publisher and former BMI Nashville chief Jody Williams was feted with the CMA’s 2023 Songwriter Advocate Award for his four decades as a Nashville publishing executive whose dedication to music made him a mentor and a friend to hundreds of aspiring writers and artists. (See below for a full list of winners and songs.)

Black Country, New Road share eight unreleased songs in concert film Live at Bush Hall

Days before the release of Black Country, New Road’s towering sophomore LP, Ants From Up There (42nd on our 50 best albums of 2022 list), lead singer Isaac Wood left the band abruptly, citing the onset of debilitating depression and anxiety that made it “difficult to play guitar and sing at the same time.” Instead of calling it quits — and without even taking much time to process the loss — the remaining six members of the group wrote an entirely new set of songs to perform on their ensuing world tour. Unreleased until now, eight of these tracks have been immortalized in a new concert film: Live at Bush Hall.

Black Country, New Road release new music as live film

Black Country, New Road have released a new live film featuring eight brand new songs.“We didn’t want to do a studio album”, says pianist May Kershaw. “We wrote the new tracks specifically to perform live, so we thought it might be a nice idea to put out a performance”.Filmed over three nights at Bush Hall in London in December, the band decided against the convention of cutting together multiple performances to look like one and instead gave each show a distinct visual style, which they cut between throughout the film.“We had concerns from live sessions we’ve seen or done in the past”, says guitarist Luke Mark. “They are very obviously clumped together visually from multiple performances.
