‘The Staircase’ Star Rosemarie DeWitt Had to Overcome ‘Some Qualms’ Before Signing On to the True Crime Series

A war of words has broken out between the filmmakers who have brought audiences two different versions, nearly two decades apart, of the real-life mystery behind The Staircase.

FX has its summer plans. The network today revealed premiere dates for eight new or returning series including the debut of Jeff Bridges-led drama The Old Man, new Hulu comedy The Bear and Ryan Reynolds docuseries Welcome to Wrexham, along with fresh seasons of What We Do in the Shadows, Reservation Dogs and American Horror Stories.

Sasha Urban editorAs the production designer of “The Staircase,” HBO Max’s adaptation of the seminal true-crime docuseries, Michael Shaw had immense challenges in front of him, chief among them the series’ namesake.The show, which premiered May 5, explores the confounding circumstances of the death of Kathleen Peterson (played by Toni Collette), whose body was found at the bottom of a narrow staircase in the back of the North Carolina home she shared with her novelist husband Michael (Colin Firth) and their five children. Although the original French documentary series captures the Peterson family and their house in great detail, when Shaw first signed on alongside set decorator Edward McLoughlin, he hadn’t seen the documentary — and didn’t plan to.

Hannah Dodd (Anatomy of a Scandal) is set to play the the elusive Bridgerton sibling in Season 3 of Netflix and Shondaland’s Regency-era period drama series based on Julia Quinn’s romance novels. She is joining the hugely popular series in a recasting, taking over the role from Ruby Stokes who left and is the lead of another Netflix series, the upcoming Lockwood & Co., an adaptation of Jonathan Stroud’s books.

On “Candy”, Hulu’s true-crime series about the killing of Betty Gore starring Jessica Biel as accused axe murderer Candy Montgomery, Justin Timberlake makes a surprise appearance in episode four, “Cover Girl”, as Deputy Steve Deffibaugh, the real-life cop who led the criminal investigation. Timberlake, of course, is not the only spouse to show up on the series. Jason Ritter, husband to Melanie Lynskey, who portrays Betty, appears on the limited series as Timberlake’s partner.

Note: The following review contains spoilers for the true crime case that inspired the series “Candy.”In June of 1980, Candy Montgomery confessed to killing her friend Betty Gore thirteen days after Gore’s bloody corpse was found on the floor of her suburban Texas home. What seemed like an open and shut case had so many twists and turns that the town — the world — was shocked when Montgomery was found innocent.

It’s lovely to see former “Happy Days” star and Emmy-winner Henry Winkler in a full-blown renaissance period, just thriving as an outstanding comedic character actor on shows like “Arrested Development” and Bill Hader‘s hit HBO hitman comedy “Barry.” Winkler won the Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series at the 70th Emmy Awards for his work on “Barry,” and it’s clear that HBO wants to keep staying in the Winkler business as they’re looking to reunite for a new true-crime series at the prestigious television studio.

There’s “The Girl From Plainville,” “Inventing Anna,” “The Thing About Pam” — the list goes on, with nearly all of them based on podcasts, books or documentaries that at one point gripped the nation.But before any of those stories existed, there was “The Staircase,” a 13-part docuseries by French filmmaker Jean-Xavier de Lestrade (released in parts beginning in 2004 on the Sundance Channel before landing on Netflix in 2018) that followed the confounding case of Michael Peterson and his wife Kathleen’s 2001 death at the bottom of their home’s back staircase.

Many of these shows have played as flat reenactments that don’t earn the running time they demand, serials that seem to be more interested in checking items off a list to get us to an opinion about “what really happened” than in finding something transformative in a familiar story.

, the captivating HBO Max true-crime series, explores the complicated lives of Michael Peterson, who is suspected of killing his wife, Kathleen, after she is found dead at the bottom of the stairs, and members of his large family, who are trying to cope with the unexpected death of their matriarch all the revelations that emerged in the investigation that followed. Inspired by the real-life story that was first captured in the Netflix docuseries of the same name and later lampooned in season 1 of NBC’s, the limited scripted series adapted by showrunners Maggie Cohn and creator Antonio Campos features an all-star cast, including Colin Firth as Michael and Toni Collette as Kathleen as well as Dane DeHaan, Odessa Young, Olivia DeJonge, Patrick Schwarzenegger and Sophie Turner as their various kids. Additionally, Juliette Binoche, Michael Stuhlbarg, Parker Posey, Rosemarie DeWitt, Tim Guinee and Vincent Vermignon appear as extended family members and other people involved in the investigation. While Michael’s story may be familiar to some, especially given the attention that surrounded the many iterations of the docuseries and the scripted parody that followed, ET has put together a guide to the sprawling Peterson family, the various theories surrounding Kathleen’s death as well as the ins and outs of the HBO Max series. “While it feels like this story has kind of been told before, the reality is there's so much of the story that hasn’t been explored,” Campos said, with Firth adding that this version “messes with your expectations.” Michael’s immediate family is quite large – and quite layered – especially considering it’s a blended family made up of kids from previous marriages and the adoption of two daughters.
