The Right Stuff Is a Childhood Dream Come True

Directed by New York filmmaker Hao Wu (People’s Republic of Desire) and China-based journalists, Weixi Chen and “Anonymous,” 76 DAYS made its world premiere at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival.

The Right Stuff launches on Disney+ on October 9 and you can read how Colin O’Donoghue mastered the Oklahoma accent in spite of only having three days to prepare for the role here.

Caroline Framke Chief TV CriticEven if you haven’t seen the 1983 film or read Tom Wolfe’s 1979 book of the same name, chances are you’ve already seen something exactly like “The Right Stuff.” In its retelling of the true story of “The Mercury 7” (i.e. the intrepid group of American astronauts vying to be the country’s first space travelers), this TV version of “The Right Stuff” never met a space story cliché it didn’t embrace with open arms.

Jake McDorman, who has appeared on two of the best TV series of the year, and, as well as taken the lead as Alan Shepard on the ambitious Disney+ series . But for the 34-year-old actor, who first broke out on the ABC Family original just over a decade ago, it’s been a long time coming. “I mean, as much as an actor can have agency over their choices, that is something that was very much by design,” McDorman tells ET.

NEW YORK -- When Hollywood does biopics on musicians, we're used to lots of saucy tales of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. Not so much when it comes to astronauts.That changes with “The Real Stuff,” an eight-part National Geographic scripted series that shows the often ugly birth of American space exploration.“Astronauts are treated like gods in our culture and they’re unique in that way,” said writer, showrunner and producer Mark Lafferty.
