There’s an all-new preview for Disney+’s upcoming series “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder,” and it gives us our best look at some of the show’s queer characters yet.
We’ve known for a while that Billy Porter and Zachary Quinto would be joining the cast of the show as two gay dads of a new character played by Keke Palmer. And now, we’ve seen those characters in action.
Of course, the trailer has lots of usual “Proud Family” hijinks, including Oscar yelling, Penny trying to have fun with her friends, and of course, Suga Moma being Suga Moma. But there are some new things, and characters, as well.
At one point in the preview, Oscar meets a new character at a bank, Randall Leibovitz-Jenkins, voiced by the incomparable Billy Porter. This new character tells Oscar “we brothers stick together,” before introducing him to his husband Barry (Quinto). Later, at a party, he encourages Oscar to “you should try looking at the world through Penny’s eyes.”
Next, we see a scene of Oscar dancing along with Barry and Randall, and the rest of the family. It looks like his new friends really open Oscar’s eyes and help him grow. We love to see it.
“The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder” also features the voice talents of EJ Johnson, Lil Nas X, Lizzo, Jane Lynch, Lena Waithe, and a whole of other amazing talents. We know that Johnson will also be playing a queer character. His character Michael Collins (who we saw in the last trailer), is described as a “nonconforming trendsetter” who “serves fierce looks at school.”
“The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder” debuts on Disney+ on Feb. 23.
