As 2022 draws to a close, we’ve selected ten key events in music and the music business from the last year. 01: Economics of streamingIn his annual review of the wider music rights sector, Will Page declared this year that “music copyright has never had it so good”, after his study estimated that global revenues for the record industry and music publishing sector in 2021 reached almost $40 billion on the back of the ongoing streaming boom.However, of course, many artists and songwriters argue that they are not seeing the benefit of that streaming boom – and the boost it has brought about in the music rights sector – because of the way the music streaming business is set up and how digital revenues are shared out between artists, record labels, songwriters, music publishers and the streaming services.Those arguments from the music-maker community became all the more vocal during the COVID-19 pandemic when other music industry revenue streams started to slide or stopped entirely, while streaming revenues continued to grow. UK music consumption up again, as British artists fill top ten of 2022
Music consumption in the UK was up again in 2022 – or so says record industry trade group BPI in its customary end-of-year stats pack focused on how much music was streamed by and sold to British consumers in the last twelve months.Based on its crunching of Official Charts Company data, the BPI reckons that 159.3 billion audio streams occurred on digital music platforms in the UK last year, up 8.2% on 2021. This means that, in the average week, more than three billion audio streams are being played by British consumers across the various music services. Good times.If you do the magical (and only slightly mysterious) maths that equates streams to album sales, streaming accounted for 86.1% of recorded music sales last year, in terms of units rather than cash through the till.

In doing so, it will become the No. 1 worldwide release of 2022, surpassing Top Gun: Maverick’s $1.489B.

Maxi Jazz, lead singer for the British electronic music group Faithless, died Friday, the band confirmed on Facebook. Jazz, whose real name was Maxwell Fraser, “died peacefully in his sleep”, Faithless member Sister Bliss announced on Twitter. A cause of death was not revealed. Jazz was 65.
