If you're looking for a holiday spot that's something a bit different, you can rent out an entire Scottish castle that dates back to the 13th century.
Mingary Castle is located approximately one mile southeast of the small village of Kilchoan in the Scottish Highlands. Situated on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea, the castle lay in ruins for centuries before an extensive refurbishment.
Situated on a ridge of rock overlooking the sea, the site was considered strategically important and so the castle was constructed in order to dominate the northern entrance to the Sound of Mull. According to the Mingary Castle website, it was originally built by Clan MacDougall.
Later, in the 15th century, King James IV of Scotland stayed at the castle, which by this point was controlled by Clan MacIain. After using it as a stronghold for fighting off Clan Donald, the king granted John MacIain "the castle and fortalice of Mingary".
Following this, the castle was besieged by the MacDonalds of Lochalsh who captured it two years later. A few years after, the MacIains attempted to take back Mingary but were unsuccessful and their clan chief was killed in the process.
Over the following decades, the castle saw more bloodshed. During this time, it hosted Clan Campbell, the Earls of Argyll, and even members of the Spanish Armada.
In the 21st century, the castle fell due to crumbling stonework, a battered roof, and collapsed floors. In an effort to prevent the remains of the castle from falling into the sea, a three year renovation project was undertaken in 2013.
The project was a success, and has since been "restored to its former glory". Today, individual rooms can be rented out and even the entire castle, sleeping 10 guests overall.
