After years of talking about it and fans wondering if it’ll ever get made, it appears that Netflix’s long-in-development “Beverly Hills Cop” sequel is moving ahead. Flying Lotus has confirmed the cast for his new sci-fi thriller Ash, which will feature Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tessa Thompson in leading roles.The new film from the electronic producer – real name Steven Ellison – was announced back in January and follows his 2017 directorial debut Kuso. It’s based on an original screenplay from Jonni Remmler.

EXCLUSIVE: The long-awaited sequel to the classic comedy franchise is a go as sources tell Deadline that Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have joined series star Eddie Murphy in Netflix’s newly titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Production on the sequel is under way with Mark Molloy directing. Murphy is back as Axel Foley and will produce along with Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman of Jerry Bruckheimer films. Will Beall penned the script.

When you see two prominent, A-list actors sign up for a film from a fairly young, up-and-coming filmmaker, it always makes you take notice. What do these folks see that encouraged them to sign up? Is it the story? Well, in the case of Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who both signed up to star in the upcoming film, “Ash,” it’s clearly due to the chance to work with the filmmaker, Steven Ellison, aka Flying Lotus.

Thompson plays a space station worker who wakes up on a distant planet to find her colleagues viciously killed, and then forced to work together with the man (Gordon-Levitt) sent to rescue her. But as their investigation into what happened sets in motion a terrifying chain of events, the rescuer begins to wonder how innocent she really is. Executive produced by Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”), “Ash” is based on an original screenplay written by Jonni Remmler. XYZ Films and GFC Films will produce, with Echo Lake also onboard as an executive producer. XYZ Films is financing and handling worldwide sales at next week’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Tessa Thompson (Westworld) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Super Pumped) are are attached to star in the sci-fi thriller Ash, which the Grammy-winning musician and filmmaker Flying Lotus — otherwise known as Steven Ellison — will direct as his sophomore feature, as we first reported in January. Neill Blomkamp (District 9) has since then come aboard to exec produce the pic, which its financier XYZ Films will rep for worldwide sales at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival.

After another astronaut (Gordon-Levitt) comes to rescue her, they begin to investigate what happened, setting into motion a horrifying series of events that leave them wondering if they can really trust each other.Flying Lotus will compose an original score.
