Karen O says Jimmy Iovine hoped she’d be the next Gwen Stefani

Karen O has said that Jimmy Iovine hoped she’d become the next Gwen Stefani after Yeah Yeah Yeahs signed to Interscope Records. The New York trio released their first four studio albums through the major label – which was co-founded by Iovine in 1990 – beginning with their classic 2003 debut, ‘Fever To Tell’.Earlier this year, it was confirmed that YYYs had signed a new deal with Secretly Canadian. The band will release the highly-anticipated ‘Cool It Down’ – their first record in nine years – tomorrow (September 30).In a recent interview with Vulture, frontwoman Karen O talked about how “the music industry couldn’t be more different now” compared to the early-to-mid-’00s. “It’s a matter of survival for a lot of labels, and rock is not really a priority for them anymore,” she said.“It actually felt like a fluke for our little crew of colleagues back in 2003 – it was such a flash in the pan as far as labels actually championing that and feeling like, ‘Wow, this could be the next Nirvana or something’.”The conversation then turned to O’s past concern about “Gwenomics”, a term she’s said to have used in relation to the No Doubt singer’s pivot into a solo pop career with ‘Love.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have released a new single, ‘Burning’. Listen the dance floor ready track below.Produced by Andrew Wyatt and featuring lyrics and inspiration from The Four Seasons‘ track, ‘Beggin’, Karen O said the fiery track was also inspired by an actual inferno.“Back when I was 19 living in the east village, one night a roommate dragged me out of the apartment for an impromptu drink across the street, I left a votive candle burning on a plastic yaffa block which in my absence set flame to my room,” O said.Karen continued: “Within an hour and a half of having one drink down the block firefighters had come and gone extinguishing the fire, I came home to find that a natural disaster had occurred (to my room) and most of my stuff, lost in the flames.”The songwriter also said that “all electronic goods were melted and demolished like my laptop, cameras etc.” before pointing out how odd it was that “items that held the most sentimental value remained intact like sketchbooks, a favourite sweater with hearts across the chest, and photographs.”She added: “I had photos of my parents in their youth where the fire burnt around the two of them as if there was some intangible force field protecting them, many photos like that, mysteriously leaving the beloved subjects untouched.”A post shared by YEAH YEAH YEAHS (@yeahyeahyeahs)“If the world is on fire I hope the most beloved stay protected and that we do all we can to protect what we cherish most in this life,” O said.
