‘Valorant’ gets first new weapon since launch

Riot Games has confirmed a new weapon will be coming to Valorant as part of a new update. The Outlaw is a high impact, double-barrelled sniper rifle that will cost players 2400 credits. It can fire two shots before a lengthy reload, but players can shoot both of those shots without needing to descope.According to various players who’ve been able to try out The Outlaw in early access, the new sniper rifle has a very high wall penetration and is placed between The Marshall and The Operator in the pre-round item shop.“We felt there was a gap in the arsenal that could be filled between the Marshal and Operator in terms of power and price, and we wanted more options to support the sniper playstyle,” said Nick Smith, Game Designer II and Sal Garozzo, Game Design Architect via Forbes.

‘Valorant’ offers a glimpse into hell with April Fool’s “patch notes”

Riot Games has marked the occasion with a fake set of “patch notes” for its PC shooter Valorant. In the “patch notes”, Riot Games outlines a Valorant update that would transform the shooter into a hellscape for many of its fans. The fictional update would see Gekko’s “bestie” Wingman gain the ability to pick up and wield guns, while Breeze would become Valorant‘s only playable map.According to the patch, shots fired from each spawn will now shoot directly into the enemy spawn because “map control is mid anyway,” and a “Suss Teammate Mode” would drop players into a version of solo queue with their scoreboard and communications disabled. The fictional Valorant would also bring some good news for Brimstone fans, as the agent’s beard would give a rapid-fire bonus to any agents within his vicinity.Luckily, the update isn’t real — though in the real world, Valorant has had a very busy few weeks.Episode 6 Act 2 of Valorant kicked off in early March and introduced a new agent called Gekko.

‘Valorant’ patch 5.06 will bring “major” changes to the Pearl map

Riot Games have released the patch notes for the latest patch to Valorant, which promises some alterations to the Pearl map, as well as some weapon updates and bug fixes.Patch 5.06 is bringing a handful of small changes to Pearl, which was first revealed this summer. Changes have been made in order to reduce complexity and to make it easier for both attackers and defenders to move through the underwater map’s areas. For instance, Riot Games has lowered the waist-high wall on the left side of B Main, so that it can no longer completely hide anyone, the raised platform in Mid Shops has been extended, and alterations have been made to Mid so that it no longer favours attackers while giving defenders more of an even playing field.Additionally, A Art has been altered, as the developers noted that both attackers and defenders were having difficulties moving effectively through the area, and so it has been simplified so that there are fewer areas to check.Riot Games has described the changes as “major”, and shared that they have been made in reaction to months’ worth of player feedback.

Instead, the map will be playable on a Pearl-only queue in that time, giving players a chance to learn its layout before having to play in it competitively.Pearl is an underwater city “directly inspired by Portuguese culture”, and will feature no unique mechanics “to keep things a little more straightforward”.In the meantime, Split has been “temporarily” removed from the map pool in both unrated and competitive queues.

‘Valorant’ is taking steps to stop players from encountering only Icebox

Riot Games has released a new article discussing Valorant‘s map diversity and explaining how it has made improvements to tune it for competitive play.In the new game health article, a member of the competitive team on Valorant, Brian Chang, acknowledged players’ frustration with encountering the same map multiple games in a row, explaining that as a result, “we wanted to make sure that we could improve the diversity of maps played without compromising the health of matchmaking (by influencing things like queue times or match balance).”Chang said that when the game launched, map selection was “truly as random as it could be” and all maps had an identical chance – 25 per cent – of being chosen regardless of what the players played recently. However, according to new Riot stats, over the course of five games, 26 per cent of players saw the same map three times or more.Fast forward to 2022, Valorant now has seven maps, and feedback from North American players informed Riot Games around March of this year that 67 per cent felt like they were encountering the same map multiple times in a row. With patch 4.04, the developer implemented a more diverse map selection change, so instead of making it a random process, it opted to create a deterministic choice that selects the map that minimizes streaks.

‘Valorant’ pro Sinatraa wants to “return to competitive play” after sexual abuse allegations

Valorant esports player Jay “Sinatraa” Won was suspended by Riot Games for “failing to fully cooperate” with an investigation into accusations of sexual assault. However, yesterday (April 12) Sinatraa took to social media to say he was “ready for a return to competitive play.”Sinatraa was a pro gamer and a member of Valorant team Sentinels when his ex-girlfriend Cleo Hernandez released a statement on Twitter detailing her relationship with him. In the lengthy post, Hernandez detailed multiple instances of alleged sexual assault, gaslighting, and mental and emotional abuse at the hands of Sinatraa alongside supporting evidence.Within days, Sinatraa was temporarily suspended by Sentinels with Riot Games later handing out a six-month ban due to his failure to fully cooperate with the investigation.Speaking about the decision Alex Francois, the Head of Competitive Operations for Valorant Esports said that while the investigation “did not come to a definitive conclusion”, the Competitive Operations team that was reviewing the case “had serious concerns with Sinatraa’s conduct during the course of the investigation.”The ban expired in September but since then, Sinatraa hasn’t taken part in any professional tournaments. However, yesterday (April 12) he took to Twitter to say “It’s been a year since I was forced to step back from competitive play.

‘Valorant’ developer outlines how it’s tackling communications abuse

Riot Games has addressed issues surrounding toxicity within Valorant and its chat systems, outlining what it’s already done and what’s still to come.In a blog shared today, Riot Games has shared its thoughts on abuse and toxicity within Valorant.“While we can never remove the bad conduct itself from individuals, we can work to deter behavior such as insults, threats, harassment, or offensive language through our game systems,” explained the blog, whilst adding that there’s also room to “encourage “pro-social” behaviour”.Outlining what the studio already does to combat toxicity, the blog states that Riot currently uses player feedback to identify when some individuals are deemed particularly toxic, so it can punish them faster. It also touches on the game’s recently-added muted words list, which aims to let players choose which words and phrases they do not want to see or hear in the game.On the topic of punishments, Riot says it has issued 400,000 voice chat and text bans and 40,000 bans in January alone.Looking ahead, Riot shared its plans to expand its efforts to tackle toxicity in voice chat, on which it said the following:When a player experiences toxicity, especially in voice comms, we know how incredibly frustrating it is and how helpless it makes us feel both during the game, as well as post game. Not only does it undermine all the good in Valorant, it can have lasting damage to our players and community overall.

They exist on a regional level – we have one in France, one in Turkey, one in Nina et cetera.

The notes add that “these improvements should play well with in-game overlays, however, having another program’s window on top of your gameplay window will negate these benefits.”There are also a handful of performance updates for Valorant as well, including an AFK (away from keyboard) detection buff, better detections for non-participatory behaviour done whilst in-game, and agent-select reporting.

‘Valorant’ to make the game “less toxic” with player-curated muted word list

Riot Games have announced that the 4.01 patch for Valorant will go live later today (January 19) allowing players to curate their own muted word list.As it stands, Valorant has an AI that filters out unsavoury language from the game but this new addition will allow players to curate which words they don’t want to see in-game.“We admit that some players are often smarter than our automated bad word detection system and continually find creative ways to type things we don’t want to in chat.”“This is why we need your help to make our detections better! Help us, help you,” reads the announcement before explaining how the use of numbers and punctuation in the place of letters is allowing players to bypass the current setup.“We’re hoping that we can leverage the lists that you and others create to make the chat less toxic by comparing them across regions, and using the data we collect to improve our own detections of bad words. Thanks in advance for all that are willing to lend a hand.
