Can the Golden Globes return to its once lofty perch among Hollywood’s favorite awards shows? That placement on the winner’s mantlepiece was always shakey, but up until 2021 the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual shindig was, at its worst, a beloved post-New Year’s industry party. Now, after being dressed down for its business practices and a lack of specific POC inclusion in its ranks (that lead to a non-televised ceremony earlier this year), the HFPA is hoping after a membership overall that all can be forgiven.

In a recent chain of events, NBC has altogether canceled the 2022 Golden Globes amidst the intense scrutiny surrounding Hollywood Foreign Press Association. During the 2021 broadcast of Golden Globes, HFPA members addressed the issue regarding lack of cultural diversity as there was not one black member in all of the jury consisting of international journalists.

The Hollywood Press Association recently came under fire for its lack of diversity after the Los Angeles Times' report revealed that it consisted of zero Black members in the 87-person organization.

This was probably not the Golden Globes ceremony that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Dick Clark Productions, and NBC were dreaming of just weeks ago. And, no, we’re not even referring to the controversy over the HFPA’s lack of Black membership or questionable practices within the organization itself (which was mentioned numerous times by the hosts, nominees, and winners).

Like many awards shows, the Golden Globes already announced it would push its telecast to line up with Oscar’s new pandemic-delayed April date. The Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted ceremony is locked in for a Sunday, February 28th broadcast.

The shut down of the world’s theaters due to the coronavirus pandemic has already affected the usually packed awards season calendar. The Oscars changed their calendar first, moving to April 25 with other major awards shows following suit.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is implementing changes to its film eligibility rules for the 2021 Golden Globes because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Another major Hollywood awards ceremony is going meat-free, with the Critics’ Choice Awards announcing it will only serve plant-based food.
