Michael Schneider Variety Editor at LargeOne of the key character traits of snotty college duo Olivia (Sydney Sweeney) and Paula (Brittany O’Grady) on HBO’s “The White Lotus” is their choice of poolside reading material. They’re skimming through Nietzsche and Freud when not casting side eye and throwing withering commentary about the people around them.Later, they also pick up Frantz Fanon, Camille Paglia and Aimé Césaire. But Sweeney, speaking Saturday at the ATX TV Festival in Austin, revealed something more about that character: She believes it’s all an act.
“Oh, she was not actually reading any of these books,” Sweeney told moderator Danielle Turchiano.Sweeney said that that at the very least she was excited to read those books on set — only to learn they were props. “They were blank!” she said. The overall series experience, especially the show’s heavy dose of humor, was a delight for the actor.
““Jennifer Coolidge and Murray Bartlett are two of the funniest people I’ve ever met and I hope to work with them again,” she said. As for the end of “The White Lotus,” Sweeney appreciated seeing a glimmer of humanity in Olivia, which she said “felt that was a good closing for me, she has a little bit in there, there might be hope for her. I hope she and Paula can continue to be friends.”There are more loose ends, obviously, in “Euphoria” as that show continues.
“Cassie got on my nerves sometimes” but being an actor means going to places you wouldn’t go yourself, she said. Does Cassie need to make amends on Euphoria? “I enjoy going crazy. So I kind of hope she’s still a little crazy.

Ethan Shanfeld SPOILER ALERT: Do not read if you have not watched the sixth episode of “The White Lotus” Season 1, titled “Departures.”“The White Lotus” opens with a coffin being loaded onto a plane but doesn’t address the death looming over the series until its final episode.Learning he is about to be fired from his job as hotel manager, Armond (Murray Bartlett) goes on a drug binge and saunters over to the Pineapple Suite, which has finally been relinquished to “special chosen baby child” Shane (Jake Lacy), who is downstairs wrapping up a tumultuous honeymoon. Michael Schneider Variety Editor at LargeMy recent column about the plight of awards consultants in this age of Too Much TV clearly struck a nerve. Among everything I’ve written about the Emmys this year, it’s received the most reaction — mostly from publicists nodding their heads in frustration with the jam of events and campaigns.Since I’m apparently in a solicitous mood, this time I’ll turn my attention to the awards rule makers at the Television Academy — the folks who receive the lion’s share of ire this time of year, including in columns such as this.
It’s not often an actor can work for 35 years and suddenly make the leap into serious, household-name fame. But that’s precisely what happened to Murray Bartlett. The Australian began acting back in 1987, and while he’s landed a plethora of projects in his career, he says, “I haven’t really had that many choices along the way.” Then came The White Lotus. And Bartlett’s portrayal of fussy, tortured hotelier Armond took him from working actor to the kind of famous that inspires Halloween costumes and selfies on the street.
Murray Bartlett has been acting for 35 years, but it wasn’t until his turn as smiling and spiraling hotel manager Armond in HBO’s “The White Lotus” that Hollywood started buzzing about its new “breakout star.”“In the last year since ‘White Lotus,’ I’ve had more choice and more work than I’ve ever had,” the Australian actor tells Variety. The role earned him an Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts prize and Critics’ Choice Award, but Bartlett’s career hasn’t always been a smooth journey. “There have been times where I haven’t worked much — sometimes long periods,” he says.

[HBO series] ‘Enlightened,’ and I loved that show and started really getting into his stuff. I started this project pretty late. When I came in, we were, like, about a month from mixing time, so I started working only with the script.”Though Hawaii was a backdrop for “White Lotus” that Tapia de Veer was not terriblly familiar with, he knew that the tension of the series would present itself through unveiling emotions under the surface and expressed it with well-utilized instruments.“I have an instrument that’s called a charango, which is small guitar like a ukulele but with more strings,” the composer said.
