Zack Sharf Digital News Director Sasha Calle is bound to become one of the breakout stars of the summer movie season thanks to her role as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in Warner Bros.’ comic book tentpole “The Flash.” In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Calle revealed she met former Superman actor Henry Cavill after filming “The Flash” and asked for his blessing. Supergirl is the cousin of Superman, after all. “Yes, I met him,” Calle said. “I met him actually after the movie was done, months later. I gave him a big hug. You know, it’s Henry Cavill, man! Our Man of Steel. He is kind and very proper, and it was a great experience.” “I asked him, ‘Did I make you proud, cuz? Does Superman approve?'” Calle continued. “And he was like, ‘Absolutely. You did a phenomenal job.’ I think, to me, that meant the world, because it’s Henry Cavill, Man of Steel.”
When Calle was cast as Supergirl and shot “The Flash,” Cavill was still Superman in Warner Bros.’ DC Universe. Cavill debuted as the character in Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” and reprised the role in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League.” Cavill announced his Superman return last October, when he put the cape back on to reprise the character in the post-credits scene of Dwayne Johnson’s “Black Adam.” But the announcement was premature, as just a few weeks later Warner Bros. announced James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new heads of DC Studios. With their hiring came an overhauling of the DC Universe, which is now getting a new, younger Superman in a film written and directed by Gunn. “We didn’t fire Henry. Henry was never cast,” Gunn told reporters in January. “For me, it’s about who do I want to cast as Superman and who do the filmmakers we have want to

Andy Muschietti has landed his next role in the DC Universe!
Zack Sharf Digital News Director SPOILER ALERT: This story contains minor spoilers from “The Flash,” now playing in theaters nationwide. Reviews for Warner Bros.’ long-in-the-works “The Flash” movie have been largely favorable to mixed, but most critics agree the film is the latest comic book tentpole to suffer from unappealing visual effects. Leaked scenes on social media have also led to fan bafflement over the film’s VFX, especially an opening sequence in which Ezra Miller’s superhero speeds to Gotham City to save a bunch of falling babies from a collapsing hospital. To say the VFX babies in “The Flash” opening scene are rendered in a hugely un-human way would be an understatement. The same goes for all of the human characters who appear during the movie’s many time travel sequences. Suffice to say, none of them look human at all.

Matt Donnelly Senior Film Writer Andy Muschietti is officially suiting up to direct a new Batman film, Variety can report exclusively. The film is one of several new DC Studios titles mapped out by leaders James Gunn and Peter Safran earlier this year. Muschietti, behind this weekend’s superhero release “The Flash,” will direct “Batman: The Brave and the Bold.” The project is based on the comic series authored by Grant Morrison, who Gunn called “exceptionally influential” on in the DC Universe in January. The comics imagine a “Bat family,” where Bruce Wayne’s biological son Damian serves as Robin to his dad’s Batman. Muschietti’s sister and creative partner Barbara will produce the project via their label Double Dream, alongside Gunn and Safran.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Joseph Fiennes expressed regret to The Observer over his decision to play Michael Jackson in a pulled 2017 episode of Sky Arts’ anthology series “Urban Myths.” The episode centered on Jackson taking a post-9/11 road trip with Marlon Brando (Brian Cox) and Elizabeth Taylor (Stockard Channing). Fiennes’ casting as the music icon generated whitewashing backlash, and the episode’s trailer ignited outrage over Fiennes’ lighter skin tone and prosthetic nose to play Jackson. “I think people are absolutely right to be upset,” Fiennes said. “And it was a wrong decision. Absolutely. And I’m one part of that — there are producers, broadcasters, writers, directors, all involved in these decisions. But obviously if I’m upfront, I have become the voice for other people. I would love them to be around the table as well to talk about it. But you know, it came at a time where there was a movement and a shift and that was good, and it was, you know, a bad call. A bad mistake.”
