There’s just over three months to go before the 2023 Sundance Film Festival kicks off, but for nearly three dozen films the festivities have already begun.
The Sundance Institute today announced 35 projects that are the recipients of $1.39 million in grants from the 2022 Documentary Fund. From Brazil’s increasingly decimated Rainforest, the preservation of Palestinian history, the short life of Kalief Browder to lead poisoning in Oakland, and the battle by some Jewish leaders and groups to stop the overturning of abortion rights in America, this year’s grantees once again represent the breadth and scope of Sundance’s ambition and support for unscripted work (see the full list below).
Drawing on filmmakers from the United States and 30 other countries, this year’s docu crop currently has five projects in development, 15 in production, 10 in post-production, and five “actively pursuing audience engagement and social impact campaigns,” according to Sundance. The grant funds come from The Open Society Foundations, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, newbie Gucci, the Kendeda Fund, and Luminate.

To debut on Israel’s Kan 11 channel, “East Side” turns on Momi, a former Israeli secret service agent hired to take over a Palestinian neighbourhood, one home at a time. He attempts one last sale in order to set up for life his 18-year-old daughter Maya who is on the autism spectrum. The challenge is to wrestle ownership of a grand hotel which dominates entrance to Jerusalem’s Old City. Whoever controls the entrance controls the City, Momi is told. Manori Ravindran International Editor Cargo Film & Releasing has acquired domestic and international rights to director Violet Du Feng’s feature documentary “Hidden Letters.” The film had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and its European premiere at the BFI London Film Festival. It won Best Documentary and the Audience Award at the Austin Asian American Film Festival. Cargo will premiere the film theatrically starting in New York and Los Angeles on Dec. 9. “Hidden Letters” follows two millennial Chinese women connected by their passion for Nushu, a secret female-only language that for centuries has allowed women to communicate privately without men understanding their correspondence.
