'Succession' Star Matthew Macfadyen Joins 'Deadpool 3'

Catherine Bray Set mostly in England, back before it was officially called England — and centuries before Great Britain was so much as a glint in the eye of James I — director Ed Bazalgette’s workmanlike historical epic “The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die” wraps up the events of “The Last Kingdom,” the Netfix drama series based on Bernard Cornwell’s “Saxon Tales” novels. Playing like “Game of Thrones” with more history and fewer dragons, the film opens with several smaller kingdoms, including Northumbria, Mercia and East Anglia, gearing up for a power struggle exacerbated by the recent death of Alfred the Great, king of Wessex, and worsened by the surreptitious attempts of the Danes to sow discord. 

It isn’t often that a Hollywood A-lister is willing to swap the bright lights of New York for a tiny village straddling the English and Welsh border, but one star who intends to do precisely that is Deadpool & Fall Guy star Ryan Reynolds. Hot on the heels of his ongoing success with Wrexham FC, a club he purchased back in 2020 alongside Always Sunny In Philadelphia Rob McElhenney, Ryan has reportedly splashed the cash on a quaint 4 bedroomed property worth a cool £1.5 million as he hopes to be closer to his team.

The actor didn’t use the real-life Murdochs to inspire his portrayal of Connor Roy, but he did note some similarities: “[Rupert] Murdoch had one child by his first wife, just like Logan. That child is Prudence Murdoch, who, like Connor, is not really involved in the family business at all.”

The Ryan Reynolds franchise will welcome Macfadyen, who plays the fan-favorite Tom Wambsgans on the HBO water-cooler smash, joining a new sequel that will also revive Hugh Jackman’s beloved X-Men character Wolverine. Shawn Levy returns as director, and Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will pen the script. This will be the first “Deadpool” project made since the intellectual property went to Disney in its acquisition of 20th Century Fox. All creatives involved insist the film will retain its extreme violence and raunchy tone, as well a a hard R-rating.
