Strictly Come Dancing presenter Tess Daly has one of the most recognisable names in UK showbiz, but it's not her real one. It turns out, the original Strictly staple and 52 year old mum of two has been using a different name for decades. And what's more, not even her husband and fellow TV presenter Vernon Kay, 47, calls her by her real name.
Tess, who recently opened up on her tricks to look good when wearing swimwear, was actually born Helen Elizabeth Daly, but while her mum still insists on calling her by her given name, the star opted to change it to a more musical-sounding Tess at the start of her modelling career. Despite years becoming cemented in the entertainment industry as her new moniker, she decided not to officially change it by law.
The BBC host admitted it felt "disrespectful" to her parents to do so. "My mum's really the only person who still calls me Helen, and that's not often," Tess told Weekend. "She tends to call me 'love', so when she does say 'Helen' it can take me a while to respond." Reflecting on the reason she implemented the change when she was just 17, Tess revealed that the modelling agency she signed up to already had a "Helen Davies" on their books.
The budding star wasn't desperate to stand out, but her agent thought it was important for the teenager to make a change to help her achieve that. "My agent was obsessed with [the actress] Nastassja Kinski at the time, who was in the film Tess, and thought I looked like her," the presenter went on. "So Tess it was.
