One of the decade’s most prescient hits might be getting a follow-up.

WarnerMedia has been getting an earful from creatives such as Christopher Nolan, Patty Jenkins, and Denis Villeneuve all voicing their concerns about the company releasing their entire 2021 slate of films on HBO Max with a new day-and-date model that certainly will place the streaming service in direct competition with traditional theaters and their ability to earn box office dollars.

As if Steven Soderbergh is actually Nostradamus, the filmmaker’s almost-decade-old “Contagion” seemed to lay out a similar story to the one that was experienced all over the world in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. And naturally, when you have a film become so relevant that it’s being talked about almost non-stop a decade later, there are going to be questions about whether or not there’s a potential sequel to be made.

Over the weekend, WarnerMedia took a major step in its plan to make HBO Max a legit contender to Netflix by releasing one of its biggest films of the year, “Wonder Woman 1984,” on the streaming service.

Steven Soderbergh is the type of filmmaker that is never going to hold back details of a project for fear of saying too much. Similar to Quentin Tarantino, Soderbergh is someone that will gladly talk about all aspects of his films, as well as the projects that never were and some that are soon to be.

Over the past couple of weeks, since the announcement that WarnerMedia is releasing all of the 2021 WB films on HBO Max the same day as in theaters, it appears that almost every filmmaker that has publicly spoken about the move has disagreed with the idea of collapsing the theatrical window. And those that understand the decision are still upset that WarnerMedia didn’t warn filmmakers before the announcement.

We’ve already heard from a number of filmmakers about the recent WB/HBO Max move, where more than a dozen high-profile Warner Bros. films will be debuting on the same date in theaters and on HBO Max in 2021.

AMC Theatres was already hurting before WarnerMedia made its announcement that it was sending WB’s entire 2021 film slate to HBO Max on the same day as theaters. And now, after that decision? Let’s just say AMC is none too pleased with the idea that one of the biggest studios in the world is threatening the future of the theatrical experience.

When it was announced that WarnerMedia was going to release every Warner Bros. 2021 film on HBO Max the same day as in theaters, the reactions were immediate and passionate.
