Stephen King Isn’t A Big Superhero Fan But Has Seen ‘The Flash’ And Says It Is “Heartfelt, Funny, And Eye-Popping”

Tatiana Siegel “The Flash” is almost here, and the rollout has been anything but typical.  With just 13 days to go before the film’s June 16 release, titular star Ezra Miller has done no press and will make a low-profile appearance at the Los Angeles premiere on June 12, only posing for photos rather than doing interviews. The film’s director, Andy Muschietti, and cast members Ben Affleck, Sasha Calle and Michael Shannon, as well as fellow DC Universe superhero Jason Momoa, will also hit the red carpet that will be missing the standard press gauntlet. Typically, the star of a $190 million tentpole will promote the film in interviews across print, TV and oftentimes podcasts spanning multiple continents. (Harrison Ford has been ubiquitous in the run-up to the June 30 bow of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” including a high-profile showing at the Cannes Film Festival.)

Rob Savage isn’t a household name in horror, yet, but if you look at his most recent work, this is a guy who seems like he is destined for great things in genre filmmaking. And in this episode of The Playlist Podcast, I got the chance to talk to Savage and discuss his newest film, “The Boogeyman,” which is based on a short story by Stephen King.

After the accident a strange man comes to see her father (Chris Messina) with a story about the Boogeyman, an evil entity that murdered his children. Soon enough this same entity is after the recently bereaved family.

In just two weeks, Andy Muschietti‘s “The Flash” dashes into theaters, ushering in the multiverse into the DCEU. The synopsis for the film? After Ezra Miller‘s Barry Allen goes back in time in an attempt to save his parents from getting murdered, he changes the present into one where superheroes he knows no longer exist.

The Boogeyman will be terrifying audiences on the big screen this week (June 2), having already received positive reviews.Directed by Rob Savage (Dashcam), The Boogeyman is a supernatural horror based on the work of Stephen King. It follows bereaved high school student Sadie Harper (Sophie Thatcher) and her sister Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair) who are haunted by a terrifying entity.Other cast members include Chris Messina, Marin Ireland, Madison Hu, LisaGay Hamilton and David Dastmalchian.The film is based on a short story by King, which was first published in the March 1973 issue of the American magazine Cavalier.

Last year, the movie talk of the summer was Ezra Miller‘s erratic behavior and how it potentially threatened the theatrical release of Andy Muschietti‘s “The Flash. But EW reports that, according to Muschietti and his sister, Barbara Muschietti, the threat of the blockbuster being shelved was never legitimate.

With Ezra Miller being involved in so many personal controversies, many believed that The Flash could be abandoned completely. However, director Andy Muschietti and producer Barbara Muschietti are dispelling the rumors and claim that the film was never in danger.

If the title feels familiar you would not be wrong. The word “boogeyman” has been the subject of numerous movies all using the same moniker, at least ten on iMDB database before I stopped counting, but all of them dated post 1973 when the horror master Stephen King first published his 8-page short story in a magazine, followed five years later by its inclusion in one of his classic short story collections, “Night Shift”. So in one form or another this now 50 year old tale has become shorthand for lots of Hollywood concoctions that had nothing to do with it, but hey a good title is a good title.

The filmmaker recently disclosed on “The Discourse” podcast that he has no intentions of re-casting Miller should “The Flash” team return for a potential sequel.

Ezra Miller is the star of Warner Brothers’ upcoming The Flash movie and they’ve been in the middle of lots of controversies over the past couple years that have made the film a tricky subject for the studio.

During an interview on “The Discourse” podcast, Muschietti said he has no plans to recast Miller despite the actor’s history of legal troubles and alleged abuse. “If [a sequel] happens, yes,” Muschietti said about having Miller back as the Flash. “I don’t think there’s anyone that can play that character as well as they did. The other depictions of the character are great, but this particular vision of the character, they just excelled in doing it. And, as you said, the two Barrys — it feels like a character that was made for them.”

As we approach the long-awaited release of “The Flash,” the discussion about Ezra Miller and their abuse allegations and legal issues has not really died down. Though people are praising Miller’s performance in the film, there are still plenty of folks wondering if the actor is going to stay in the lead role if the character continues in the DCU under James Gunn and Peter Safran.

DCEU fans already know from the trailers that Andy Muschietti‘s “The Flash” has a bunch of cameos from previous DC movies. For instance, Michael Shannon shows up as General Zod, Ben Affleck reprises his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman; and, in one of the upcoming film’s multiversal twists, so does Michael Keaton from Tim Burton‘s “Batman” films.
