a bunch of right wing extremists who support Trump winning nominations. But he did get to spend some time on the least depressing outcome of the night: The resounding victory for abortion rights in Kansas.See, in 2019 the Kansas Supreme Court confirmed that the right to an abortion is enshrined in the state’s constitution. So this year, Republicans — Kansas is overwhelmingly Republican — introduced a ballot initiative to change the state’s constitution to outlaw abortion instead. Supporters of the bill even rolled out some rather innovative (and unsubtle tactics) to push the bill over the finish line.
First, it was written to be very confusing — experts said this was done on purpose in order to trick opponents into voting for it. Then they scheduled the vote during a primary election instead of the general election in November. That’s because fewer people traditionally turn out for primaries as it is, Kansas is a deeply Republican state, and primaries are closed to independents.
Finally, an unknown person or persons sent out texts lying blatantly that a “yes” vote would uphold abortion rights.Despite all of that, the bill failed, historically. Voters showed up in record numbers, and rejected the bill 58%-42%, “That isn’t just a win, that’s a Kansasskicking,” Colbert joked. “And may I remind you, Kansas is a state so bright red it looks like me after 30 seconds on the beach.”Colbert then ran down the various “dirty tricks” Republicans tried in service of the bill, including those texts we mentioned above.
Colbert quoted the text verbatim: “Women in KS are losing their choice on reproductive rights. Voting yes on the amendment will give women a choice. Vote YES to protect women’s health.”“They tried to trick them into

The world depicted on Apple TV+’s hit series “Severance” is already pretty bleak, but as it turns out, it could be even bleaker — all you need is the biggest jerk version of Stephen Colbert dropped into the madness.Colbert proved this on Thursday’s episode of “The Late Show” with a fun clip in which he becomes an employee of Lumen and we see what his workplace version is like. (The frame joke is that he actually did join the show, but all his scenes were cut, in case you’re curious.)Of course you know the premise, but for those who don’t, on “Severance,” the company Lumen has devised a procedure that allows people to literally separate their work and home lives completely.
Comedian Stephen Colbert and Emmy-award-winning actress Mindy Kaling joked about their alleged beef during a Monday night segment of "The Late Show." Colbert started off by reading out loud a list of headlines detailing their rumored feud that included "Mindy Kaling mercilessly roasts Stephen Colbert after his Apple watch cuts her off," "The controversial reason Stephen Colbert had to apologize to Mindy Kaling," and "Does Mindy Kaling have beef with Stephen Colbert?" The pair laughed off the suggestions that there was any tension between them. "Mindy, let's settle that last one. Do you and I have beef?" asked Colbert. "We're the new Kanye-Pete," she replied, jokingly comparing herself to Kanye West because she is the "troubled genius." Kaling later added, "I mean, if I had to really examine it, I do think there have been things that you've done," to which Colbert interjected, "Well they didn't say anything about you talking s--t about me at the Emmys last year! You called me a messy b---h on stage at the Emmys last year!" "Wait, that's true," Kaling said.
Stephen Colbert took aim at a regular punching bag of his – Pennsylvania GOP Senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz – when he broke down the political race in the state on Thursday night’s “The Late Show.”After explaining the matchup on the Governor side of things, the “Late Show” host turned his attention to the fight between Democratic Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman who is facing off with Dr. Oz in the November election for senator.“Polls show Fetterman leading by double digits, which might be because Pennsylvanians want to have a Senator who is actually from Pennsylvania,” Colbert joked.“Dr.
Seth Meyers returned to studio on Wednesday night after recovering from a second bout of COVID-19 – or as he joked, the virus’ “Season 2 pick-up” – and, beyond his return, he celebrated Kansas’ big win on abortion rights. Of course, Meyers also celebrated how angry it probably made Justice Brett Kavanaugh. On Tuesday night, voters in Kansas overwhelmingly rejected the idea of removing a woman’s right to an abortion from the state constitution, showing up in record highs and voting against a measure that would do just that.

“The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert, like many Americans, was surprised when West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin changed course and came out in support of a reconciliation deal with Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer that would help fight climate change. So, during Thursday night’s monologue, Colbert imagined how Manchin finally came around — and it involved a classic Charles Dickens plot twist.“This bill is a marked departure from Manchin’s positions only days earlier. So what happened?” Colbert asked.
Stephen Colbert called out the Justice Department’s decision to finally announce an investigation into former president Donald Trump on Thursday’s “The Late Show,” likening the legal body to that coworker who is only just now discovering “Game of Thrones.”“There’s bad news for former president Kermit the Fraud,” Colbert said, opening the theme during his monologue, and giving Trump another new nickname. “Turns out the Justice Department is investigating the former president’s actions in their January 6 criminal probe.”Colbert had to take a moment for his audience to stop cheering over the news, but when he did, he called the Justice Department out.“It is about damn time,” he said. “At this point the investigators are like the last person at the office to catch onto a popular TV show.
