‘Star Wars’ Fans Rejoice at [SPOILER’S] Appearance in ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi': ‘Grogu Move Over’

While fans are, of course, excited to see Ewan McGregor return to his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the, aptly titled, “Obi-Wan Kenobi” Disney+ series, there has been equal (if not more) anticipation at the idea of Hayden Christensen returning as Anakin Skywalker, aka Darth Vader. Thankfully, for most people, the hype was well-deserved when we saw the duo face off in a recent episode.

While whispers of young Princess Leia coming to the “Star Wars” universe goes back years (we even mentioned it on a podcast last year), it wasn’t really until an “Obi-Wan Kenobi” casting reveal from a few months later that seemed to truly cement the fact we’d see the other Skywalker twin make a return after the passing of Carrie Fisher. With “Stranger Things” maintaining its status as one of Netflix’s most popular original properties, and “Obi-Wan Kenobi” marking the latest expansion of the “Star Wars” franchise, their premieres created what Nielsen called “the most anticipated weekend ever in streaming” — and Netflix came out on top.Netflix reported that Part 1 of the fourth season of “Stranger Things” had the company’s biggest premiere weekend ever for an English-language series, garnering 287 million hours viewed globally.

Even as “Obi-Wan” hit Disney+ slightly earlier (9pm PT Thursday night) than “Stranger Things” Season 4 Volume 1 dropped on Netflix, the new “Star Wars” series simply couldn’t compete with the number of episodes “Stranger Things” has delivered over the years. As a result, the first four seasons of the Netflix series accrued 5.1 billion U.S.

The newest batch of episodes of Stranger Things, which arrived on Netflix the same day that Obi-Wan Kenobi premiered on Disney+, powered the show to 5.1 billion minutes of U.S. streaming in its first three days, according to Nielsen.
