‘Star Trek': Paramount Beams Kalinda Vazquez Aboard to Write New Film

Ethan Shanfeld Veteran TV producer Jeffrey M. Hayes, who oversaw development of “MacGyver” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation” as executive VP of Paramount Pictures, has died from an illness unrelated to COVID.

Jeffrey M. Hayes, a longtime producer whose executive tenure at Paramount Pictures Network Television saw him overseeing the development of series including MacGyver and Star Trek: The Next Generation, died March 9 in Los Angeles from an illness unrelated to Covid-19. He was 68.

“Mandy,” “Midsommar,” and Quentin Tarantino‘s Oscar-winning “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” have seemingly helped to usher in a new wave of films about cults and subsequent revenge to the modern mainstream, and director Nick Cassavetes is jumping aboard the train too. Deadline has word that Cassavetes (“John Q“) will be writing and directing a feature film for Union Capitol Patriot Management and XYZ Films, titled “God Is A Bullet,” with production set to begin on May 24 in Mexico City.

Since its announcement, there’s been a lot of excitement surrounding the upcoming film from James Gray, “Armageddon Time.” Though the title of the film might make you think it’s a post-apocalyptic action film, Gray’s new feature is a drama that pulls from his own life as a kid in New York City, attending the Kew-Forest School in Queens, which happens to be the same school that former POTUS, Donald Trump attended.

Since J.J. Abrams‘ “Star Trek” reboot trilogy ended with “Star Trek Beyond” five years ago, Paramount has been trying to re-launch the franchise and keep the Enterprise afloat, with everyone from Quentin Tarantino to Noah Hawley and even David Cronenberg reportedly taking a shot at the popular sci-fi franchise.
