What’s On: The Victorian Pride Centre

While the weather has cooled, the Victorian Pride Centre continues to spring to life in St Kilda.   Pride Month is coming to the centre this June with a vibrant mix of events to recognise and celebrate the spirit, determination, courage, and creativity of LGBTIQ+ communities. It’s a timely message of positivity and togetherness in the wake of recent public debates that have negatively impacted LGBTIQ+ people, particularly the Trans and Gender Diverse communities. It’s an opportunity for our communities to come together and connect in a lively, welcoming environment.

Election Retrospective: We Must Remain Focused

By Nicky BathI found myself on Larrakia land, Darwin, on election night, initially with a small group of colleagues glued to the TV in a hotel bar and then later with the remaining delegates of the Australian Professional Association for Trans Health (AusPATH)* 2022 conference where we watched Scott Morrison concede. When I think about the post-election landscape, I think about buses.  The blue Liberal bus can now go in for a full service and maybe a respray. The repaint, I hope, will demonstrate reflection on how the Liberal party can be inclusive of LGBTIQ+ people and communities and see us as part of the solution in reducing health and wellbeing disparities, rather than the problem. LGBTIQ+ Health Australia (LHA) was at times welcomed onboard the blue bus, and I am grateful to Greg Hunt, Minister for Health and Aged Care, who demonstrated commitment and understanding of LGBTIQ+ people.

Do you Have a Healthy Relationship With Dating Apps?

Do you have a healthy relationship with dating apps? Probably a lot healthier than when they first came out – remember when they became a thing back in 2009? It was all exciting and new and then, as we’ve since realised happens with all social media, the toxicity of it started to seep out, people realised how much of a time (and battery!) suck they are and how easily it is to get carried away with the vapidness of it all… and yet. External validation feels so nice! But if you’ve ever had a substantial break from the apps, you can’t help but wake to the kind of person you become when they are not a part of your life vs. when you are obsessively online.

Marjorie Taylor Greene: Democrats Want to Turn Your Kids Gay

MTG Live podcast about Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has become a hero to conservatives for his opposition to political correctness, COVID-19-related shutdowns, and “cancel culture,” including the alleged (but not actual) suppression of conservative voices on social media platforms. Musk, who is poised to buy the social media giant Twitter — a development that some conservatives believe will usher in new policies protecting “free speech” — was previously accused by a female flight attendant of SpaceX, Musk’s space transportation firm, of exposing his genitalia to her, rubbing her leg, and offering to buy her a horse if she performed a sexual act for him. According to Business Insider, documents show Musk later paid the woman $250,000 as part of a severance agreement in 2018. Greene, who has embraced various conspiracy theories during her short political career, and is no stranger to inflammatory comments, claimed that breaking news about the past accusations of sexual harassment is a political attack against the billionaire, and complained that conservatives like Musk and former President Donald Trump often get accused of sexual misconduct.“If anyone was a Democrat steps out of line because they’ve decided they can’t go along with the horrible, disgusting, and failing ways of the Democrats, and they actually see the light, see the truth… They go, you know, I’m going to try voting Republican because these people over here make sense,” Greene said.

Shibari and The Art of Japanese Rope Bondage

Shibari – it brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “all wrapped up in a neat little package!” because the one being tied is literally, just that!Except, we’re not talking about the end of a Simpsons episode – we’re talking about the intricate art of Japanese Rope Bondage, though technically, the correct term for the weaving of intricate knots for trussing and dangling people for erotic and sometimes artistic purposes would be Kinbaku. Eventually, the custom fell out of practice before reappearing in underground Japanese BDSM clubs. However, it’s only been since the early 1990s that Shibari has been gaining fans and popularity outside of Japan, popping up in clubs in Europe and America, naturally filtering out from there. Image: Sydney Rope ClubBut Shibari or Kinbaku isn’t your western style of Bondage, enjoyed in traditional BDSM settings, though the two practices share some similarities.

Federal Judge Strikes Down Anti-Trans Restroom Sign Law

signed into effect by Republican Gov. Bill Lee last year, a building that has multi-user restrooms and allows people to use facilities matching their gender identity must post an 8-inch by 6-inch sign outside each restroom reading: “This facility maintains a policy of allowing the use of restrooms by either biological sex, regardless of the designation on the restroom.”Violators of the law who refuse to post a sign matching the exact specifications of the law — including things like background and text color, font size, and wording — could face a maximum fine of $500 or a misdemeanor charge that could result in them serving up to six months in jail.Shortly after the law’s passage, Davidson County District Attorney Glenn Funk, who represents Nashville and its surrounding environs, announced that his office would not enforce the law by prosecuting business owners who don’t comply.A month after the law’s passage, the American Civil Liberties Union and its Tennessee chapter filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of Robert Bernstein, the owner of Fido, a Nashville-based restaurant, alleging that the law — dubbed the “Business Bathroom Bill” by opponents — is unconstitutional because it violates’ business owners First Amendment rights by forcing them to engage in compelled speech. In July 2021, with the help of GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders and the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Curb Records and the Mike Curb Foundation filed a second lawsuit challenging the law, which is currently pending.
