Sofia Vergara and filmmaker Robert Rodriguez have joined forces to give masked hero Zorro a gender makeover.The duo is behind a new NBC take on the classic vigilante tale, which will see the hero as a heroine.Robert has co-written the script with his sister, Rebecca Rodriguez, who will also direct.Vergara is among the producers.Ironically, Robert Rodriguez was briefly attached to direct Antonio Banderas in 1998’s The Mask of Zorro before exiting the project.

First played by Douglas Fairbanks in 1920’s “The Mark of Zorro”, the swashbuckling Mexican swordsman dubbed Zorro has been a part of the movies pretty much since there were such a thing as movies.

It comes from a high-profile creative team, which includes filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, writer-director Rebecca Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara and her LatinWe, as well as Ben Siverman and Howard T. Owens’ Propagate. CBS Studios, where Propagate has a deal, will co-produce with Universal TV.
