Ulvaeus seeks source of ABBA magic with Apple radio show
LOS ANGELES -- ABBA's Björn Ulvaeus is launching a radio show on Apple Music, with hopes of figuring out why his songs like “Mamma Mia” and “Dancing Queen” have stayed stuck in the heads of so much of the world for so many decades. The guitarist, singer and co-songwriter from the Swedish supergroup will host the “Björn from ABBA and Friends’ Radio Show” on Apple Music Hits starting Monday. The limited series includes music and conversations with Ulvaeus' friends and collaborators, starting in the first episode with his fellow producer, songwriter and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Nile Rodgers.Ulvaeus and Rodgers talk about the secrets of hit-making and why ABBA's music has remained in the public consciousness.“I have long wanted to ask some emotionally intelligent as well as intellectual people who know about ABBA about why they think our songs have lasted for such a long time — almost 40 years — because I don’t understand it myself,” the 76-year-old Ulvaeus said. The show comes amid a major ABBA renaissance. Ulvaeus and bandmates Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, and Benny Andersson released their first new music together in four decades in November on the album “Voyager.” And in May, a series of holographic live shows are set to begin, created by the group and George Lucas’ special-effects company, Industrial Light & Magic.Ulvaeus' other guests on the radio show include Catherine Johnson, the British playwright who wrote the stage play of “Mamma Mia!” and the screenplay for the subsequent film.Johan Renck, the creative director of the forthcoming concerts, guests on another episode, all of which air at 3 p.m.

Review: Allende's 'Violeta,' an epic South American tale
hurricane. From the aftermath of World War I to the present day, narrator Violeta del Valle recounts the story of her life in an unnamed South American country with a book-long letter to her grandson Camilo.Violeta tells of living through the Spanish flu pandemic as the youngest child and only daughter in a family of five sons. After her father loses everything in the Great Depression, the family must relinquish their comfort in an old mansion in the nation's capital and adopt a more modest life in the country's rural south.“Violeta” recalls Allende's best known and highly successful novel, “The House of Spirits,” which weaves together the personal and the political in a saga stretching across decades.“Violeta” also details the horrors of the 1970s dictatorships in South America, which saw tens of thousands of suspected political opponents kidnapped, tortured and killed, often through Operation Condor, a U.S.-backed alliance among the region's right-wing military governments.“The government was committing atrocities, but you could walk down the street and sleep soundly at night without worrying about common criminals,” Violeta writes of those repressive times.Violeta's son is a journalist who seeks exile, first in Argentina, then in Norway after learning he is on the dictatorship's black list.Violeta suspect's her son's father of involvement in the repression through his work as a pilot.

West Side Story's Ariana DeBose convinces Bleachers' Jack Antonoff to change his band's name
She earned a Golden Globe nomination for her acclaimed performance as Anita in Steven Spielberg's new adaptation of West Side Story. And breakout star Ariana DeBose used her newfound clout to convince singer–songwriter Jack Antonoff to change the name of his band Bleachers ahead of her hosting debut on Saturday Night Live.In a promo for her episode that was released Thursday, the 30-year-old dancer-turned-actress managed to gross the out the 37-year-old producer by informing him that people sometimes get intimate 'under the bleachers.' Just teasing! Ariana DeBose, 30, poked fun at Bleachers leader Jack Antonoff enough to make him want to change the band's name in a Saturday Night Live promo featuring Bowen Yang that was released ThursdayIn the clip, Ariana put on a busty display in an off-the-shoulder dress decorated with colorful pastel stripes, while Jack affected a nerdy–cool look with a black leather jacket and thick black glasses. After she introduced herself and Jack's band Bleachers, cast member Bowen Yang — who sported newly dyed-blond hair — added, 'Such a fun name, Bleachers, like, "Hey, let's go make out under the bleachers."' But the musician seemed offended at the idea.'Nobody does that!' he interjected, while Ariana shot back, 'Yes, they do.'The thought of kissing under the bleachers seemed to have turned the musician off of his own band name.
