Scots will need to check their smoke alarms as new regulations come into force next month.
The rules mean that alarms must be interlinked so if any alarm in a property sensed smoke or a fire then all alarms will sound.
Standards will be enforced from Tuesday, February 1.
A smoke alarm will need to be installed in the room used most for daytime living - for example a living room - as well as other "circulation" spaces within the property.
"Circulation spaces" include hallways or landing on every levels.
Alarms must be ceiling mounted in each location.
In addition to this, homes will now need to have a heat alarm in every kitchen as well as a carbon monoxide detector if there are any carbon-fuelled appliances like a boiler, fire or heater in the property.
The legislation was originally due to come into force in 2021 but was delayed by the Scottish Government because of the Covid pandemic.
Last week, Housing Secretary Shona Robison said the regulations are “designed to protect and save lives” and there will be “no penalties for non-compliance”, stressing that people will not face penalties “if they need more time”.
The new rules may be causing confusion for some.
