A Scots family have been left devastated after a crook hailed them down and demanded cash for petrol in a vile scam.
The callous con artist was spotted flagging down motorists in various locations around Lanarkshire and the Scottish Borders pleading for money for fuel so he could 'go to the hospital to see his sister who was in a car accident'.
The man - who was driving a black BMW - had his car parked at the side of the road with hazard lights on and tried to grab the attention of passersby.
On one occasion, at around 10.20am on Sunday, he hailed down a family in Biggar before 'begging for help' to get to the hospital.
The family agreed to let the man follow them to the petrol station where they lifted £40 for him - despite his demands for £150.
After arriving home the mum realised they had been scammed after seeing another post about the trick on social media.
In a post on Facebook, she said: "Guys just a heads up. We’ve just been ripped off.
"Headed to Columbia junction at 10.20 today and there was a Black BMW with hazards on.
"Flagged us down and was begging us to help. He was running out of fuel and needed to go to the hospital to see his sister who was in a car accident.
"He asked us for cash and we said no but he could follow us to the petrol station and we would help. Got there and he wanted £150 cash. [My husband] said absolutely not. He lifted £40 and gave him that and told him we couldn’t give him anything else.
"The man was very persistent. Anyway long story short I’ve just seen this on Facebook and I could cry.
"Why would anyone do that. I’ve got my kids in the car. Trying to do the right thing and help someone in need. I’m actually gutted this is the world be live in."

Shooting wrapped last month on the long-awaited Gerard Butler project Kandahar and here are some exclusive behind the scenes photos from the film, which is notably one of the first major U.S. titles to shoot its entirety in Saudi Arabia. The film, which is produced by John Wick outfit Thunder Road Films and Capstone, reunites Butler with his Greenland and Angel Has Fallen director Ric Roman Waugh. While this certainly isn’t the first action thriller the bankable Scottish actor has starred in, Kandahar is one of the first big-budget Hollywood titles to shoot in the country’s northwest AlUla region, which is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hegra.
