While the concept of the TV talent show may be obsolescent, with the glory days of The X Factor but a distant memory, our appetite for new music has arguably never been stronger.
As the public's investment in prime time Saturday night pop shows ebbed away, social media rapidly became the go-to place to discover new artists. With TikTok increasingly able to break emerging talent, it was only a matter of time before Simon Cowell transferred his skills over to socials.
Today, TikTok, Syco Entertainment, Universal Music Group, Republic Records and Samsung announce a groundbreaking new musical venture: StemDrop.
Launching later this month with the help of songwriting pioneer Max Martin, StemDrop looks to lead a 'new evolution of musical collaboration, curation and artist discovery.'
Here's everything you need to know about it.
What is StemDrop?Put simply, StemDrop is a collaborative project from some huge names across the music industry; encompassing management, labels and creatives.
StemDrop will see artists upload their music TikTok; think of it as the 2022 equivalent of the telly talent show audition process.
Users' submissions will be their own take on a song penned by global hitmakers Max Martin (Britney Spears, Katy Perry), Savan Kotecha (One Direction, Cher Lloyd) and Ali Payami (Taylor Swift, The Weeknd).
'Auditionees' will be provided with the separate stems of the track; its isolated elements including instrumentals, basslines and vocal tracks.
This will provide a foundation for artists to take said stems away and create their own music from its individual parts; the song can be interpreted in whichever way the artist sees fit.
From here, they'll upload their work and hope to impress bosses at Universal Music

Made with longtime collaborators Jimmy Napes, Stargate and Max Martin stablemate Ilya, the album is described in the announcement as “not only a creative revelation but something of a personal revolution for the celebrated artist. Lyrically, the subjects dive deep and wide, into contemporary narratives around sex, lies, passion, self-expression and imperfection.” Smith says, “It feels like emotional, sexual and spiritual liberation. It was beautiful, with this album, to sing freely again. Oddly, it feels like my first-ever record. And it feels like a coming of age.”
Ilana Kaplan It’s been seven years since Charlie Puth’s single “See You Again” thrust him into the pop spotlight. While the pandemic cratered the touring business, Puth, like almost all musicians and performers, turned to social media to stay in the public eye. He used TikTok to reach out to fans, replacing some of the energy that came from live shows. Not only did his more than 19 million followers get some of his thirst traps, but they also learned a handful of lessons about music theory. Now, the New Jersey-born singer is ready to bare all with his third album, “Charlie.” How did Tik Tok transform your music career? It made me very open-minded to showing the process. I used to have this mentality of “I need to go away for an extended period of time and work on my music alone and not show anybody and give away the secrets.” But now I can give every secret away. It actually makes the songs more vibrant.
With so many artists emerging from TikTok in 2022, it can be difficult to cut through the noise. One artist who's managed to transcend the app and replicate her social media success on the Official Chart, though, is New Jersey export Jax.
Last week’s episode of the Great British Bake Off, which aired both in the UK and the US, has left fans with a poor taste in their mouths.
