There are more parenting styles out there than mums have had lukewarm cups of tea. From Kate Middleton’s famous ‘chat sofa’ trick to Victoria and David Beckham’s strict social media rules, it’s clear that every parent does things a little differently. Whether you’re a so-called ‘Silky’ mum or find yourself acting more of a ‘Helicopter’ dad, thanks to social media there have never been more ways that parents have been told just exactly how they could, or rather ‘should’ be doing their job.
So, what kind of parent are you? Parenting writer Cat Subie, who hosts the hit podcast The Sleep Mums, outlines the parenting personalities you need to be on the lookout for… Crunchy Parent This one is the granola of parenting, the wholesome I made everything from scratch, and everything is natural mum or dad. It’s had an algorithmic rise on socials, bringing a hippy flavour to a wider audience. You are all about non-medicalised birth – you laugh in the face of gas and air – you love cloth nappies and co-sleep for life.
Silky Parent Perhaps you’re a smooth operator, there’s too much stress in the world to cope with as it is, let alone in parenting too. You make everything as easy as possible so life glides like silk. Disposable nappies for the win, hell yes, you’ll have an epidural and if your kids want to fall asleep on the sofa at midnight, that works for you.
Helicopter Parent The best way to describe Helicopter parenting is like a moth hovering around the big light. It’s regimented and direct and a wee bit stifling. You can’t take your eyes off them, you are never taking the stabilisers off their bike and you lie awkwardly with them until they have been asleep for at least 3 hours.
