'Scream VI' Directors on Neve Campbell, Sequel Homages and Who Else They'd Like to Bring Back (Exclusive)

During a visit with ET, the 33-year-old actress looked back on her first installment in the series and what it has meant getting to play Kirby again, especially now that the movies are as big as ever. Released in 2011, was the first long-awaited sequel following the initial trilogy, marking the return of the original three players — Neve Campbell (Sidney), Courteney Cox (Gale) and David Arquette (Dewey) — as they faced off with Ghostface once again. Set in Woodsboro, the new film also featured a number of new high school characters played by the likes of Panettiere, Emma Roberts, Rory Culkin, Nico Tortorella, Marielle Jaffe and Erik Knudsen. After watching the clip of Kirby reciting all the horror remakes as she tries to save Charlie (Culkin) from Ghostface, Panettiere reflected on her longtime friendship with Culkin.

Neve Campbell, who featured in five of the “Scream” movies, wasn’t a part of the latest film – “Scream VI”. Actress Mellisa Barerra admits that it was “weird” not having Campbell back for the sixth film, but she found Campbell’s stance “very brave” and “important.”

Along with Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), “Scream VI” also marks the return of Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown, respectively) and “Scream 4” survivor Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere), who now works as an FBI agent and comes to New York after hearing about Ghostface’s return.

Nearly 27 years after the first “Scream” movie terrified moviegoers, the franchise is still going strong, thanks to last year’s reboot, or “requel,” also titled “Scream.” The 2022 “Scream” pulled in $3.5 million in Thursday previews in January 2022 before scaring up a solid $30 million opening weekend. “Scream 3,” released in 2000, years before some of the younger stars of the newest movie were born, holds the record for the franchise’s highest opening weekend with $34 million.

Fans of Ghostface (the masked serial killer in the film) are ready for a new round of jump scares—and it turns out, so is Demi Lovato. The singer is a major fan of the films and even wrote a special song, “Still Alive,” for its soundtrack.

The big news about “Scream VI,” if you’re maybe paying half attention to the franchise, is that Neve Campbell is no longer part of the series, at least not this sixth iteration, and she apparently misses it. “We were together over the weekend at a convention,” Skeet Ulrich, another former “Scream” alumni, told People this week.
