A Scots mum has told how she was forced to return to work while receiving treatment for cancer as she couldn't afford to pay her bills in the cost of living crisis. Joanna Shaw, 51, from Dundee, began a phased return to her job in sales in October, but struggled to survive on a reduced salary before returning full-time this week as she battles to make ends meet.
She has been receiving radiotherapy to treat breast cancer since she was diagnosed in January 2022 and is still undergoing intensive hormone therapy.
The mum-of-two was forced to ask friends for food and went without heating after taking sick leave from work to undergo treatment.
The winter months have been especially tough, with Joanna forced to go without heating and relying on jumpers and blankets in a bid to keep warm.
She told the Record: "My fuel bill is up to £280 a month from £140-150. I've been switching the heating off and just relying on blankets and jumpers. Every month I'm worried that there's not going to be enough money for certain bills coming out.
"I've had to go to the bank for help and I've been relying on other people to feed me sometimes because I just don't have enough money to fill the fridge."
Since starting back at work full time, Joanna is now unlikely to receive any financial help from the government while undergoing the remainder of her treatment.
She added: "I'm not able to get hold of any benefits because a lot of them are means tested."
Joanna is now calling on more to be done to support people going through cancer treatment in full-time employment, as she admits she would be better off on benefits. She said: "I think there needs to be more help because you're just kind of kind of left in a bit of a hole because there's no help out
