A Scots dad who was suffering from hip pain was later given the devastating news that he was had incurable cancer.
Ian Massie, 66, originally thought the pain in his hip and legs was down to his sciatica before he went for further checks last Christmas when it began to get worse. Following an appointment with his GP and a series of tests, the Edinburgh dad was told by medics that he was suffering from myeloma, a rare type of blood cancer.
As reported by Edinburgh Live, his devoted son Andrew is now set to complete his fourth marathon in a month this weekend in a bid to raise funds to find a cure. Andrew said: “He didn’t seem himself at Christmas and he knew that as well. The pain had been lingering for three months at this point. He knew something was probably up.
“But it all came as a shock to the family and great sadness with uncertainty in terms of what comes next. Your worlds are turned upside down.
"One day everything is ok then the next day you get a phone call and you immediately shift your focus. Patients can’t do what they want to do with their life – it’s a sudden shift.”
Ian was due to receive a stem cell transplant but the procedure had to be postponed after a scan flagged an issue with one of his heart valves.
Now desperate to help find a cure for the cancer, Andrew has taken on three marathons, and is set to do his fourth in a bid to raise funds for Myeloma UK. Ready to take on his fourth and final marathon in Lucerne, Switzerland, on Sunday, Andrew has raised a whopping £8,622 so far.
