A serial criminal, who was jailed just last month for carrying an offensive weapon in public, has died behind bars at HMP Perth. Michael Burza, from Kennoway, in Fife, was serving an eight-month prison sentence when he passed away on Thursday, August 4.
It is unknown how he died but a Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held into his death. The 37 year-old was sentenced at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on July 13.
Six months of the sentence was for charges within the Emergency Workers (Scotland) Act, which involve assaulting, obstructing or hindering a emergency worker when trying to do their job. He also was jailed for another two months for carrying an offensive weapon.
Earlier this year, on March 8, he was also imprisoned for six months after being convicted of acting in a threatening or abusive manner.
Burza had long criminal record. In 2018, he was convicted of robbing an elderly woman of her purse at Kingdom Shopping Centre in Glenrothes. The purse had little more than £5 in it.
The Scottish Prison Service said Burza's death had been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.
A Scottish Prison Service statement said: "Michael Burza, 37, a prisoner from HMP Perth has died on August 4, 2022.
"Mr Burza was convicted at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court in 2022. Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal. A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course."
