Sarah Jayne Dunn has opened up about getting therapy following her son’s hospitalisation, and branded her first life coach as her "guardian angel". In 2019, Sarah’s son Stanley, whom she shares with husband Jonathan Smith, fell ill leading to her having to take a brief hiatus from Hollyoaks at the time.
Sarah, 40, never disclosed information on Stanley's illness, but described it as “the most emotionally draining and stressful week of my life”. In the wake of this, the doting mum didn’t get time to properly process what had happened until the world came to a standstill in early 2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Since then, Sarah has continued on a path of “self discovery", but it was Stanley’s illness that first sparked the actress to consider therapy. She explained to OK!: “I started having therapy just before the beginning of lockdown because my little boy had been poorly, so it sort of all stemmed off the back of that.
“I think with even things like that when you talk openly, it’s about putting boundaries in place, and having fit and healthy boundaries, and learning when it’s OK to say no.” Sarah continued: "I think a lot of people over the last two years over lockdown have done a lot of self discovery because we’ve had time to stop, haven’t we and go ‘hang on a minute, where am I at? What am I happy with and what am I not happy with, and how can I change that?’." Two years on from the distressing ordeal, Sarah says her mental health is currently “the best it’s ever been”, and credited life coach Jill Ritchie for helping her.
