Former Manchester United star Ryan Giggs has said he is 'obviously disappointed' after a judge ordered a retrial over allegations he assaulted his ex-girlfriend.
Mr Giggs said he was 'confident justice will eventually be done and my name will be cleared' after a judge ordered a retrial on July 31 next year. He issued a statement after prosecutors said they would seek a further trial a week after a jury could not reach verdicts on the charges he faced during the original trial.
He said: "After more than three weeks in court I am obviously disappointed that a retrial has been ordered. My not guilty plea remains in relation to all charges. I am confident that justice will eventually be done and my name will be cleared of all the allegations.

"I would like to thank my legal team, my mum, my children, my girlfriend Zara, as well as my closest friends, for their support throughout this period. I understand the level of interest and the scrutiny around this case, but I would like to ask that my and my family’s privacy is respected in the weeks and months ahead.”
The jurors in Mr Giggs' first trial were discharged last week after they failed to reach verdicts. The Manchester Crown Court trial collapsed after the jury foreman said the seven women and four men were deadlocked, and that more time would not be useful in their deliberations.
The jury had been out considering their deliberations for 22 hours and 59 minutes. Today (Wednesday), at another hearing at Manchester Crown Court, prosecutors announced they had decided they would pursue the case to a second trial next year.
