Ruth Langsford struggled to hold back tears on Loose Women on Tuesday as she spoke about her beloved pet dog Maggie. The 63 year old was discussing a recent storyline on Coronation Street with her co-stars Frankie Bridge, Janet Street Porter and Coleen Nolan when she became very emotional on the ITV daytime show. In recent emotional episodes of the hit soap, Evelyn, played by Maureen Lipman, was forced to have her greyhound Cerberus put to sleep after he fell ill.
Ruth, who described herself as a "massive Corrie fan", admitted that the scenes made her think about Maggie one day passing away, which saw her become tearful. Dabbing at her eyes, the TV star said: "My little Maggie is probably about 13 and she’s a bit grey now. Watching that is a bit like ‘oh no, that is going to happen’." Her Loose Women panellists attempted to support her as she struggled to speak and eventually they decided it may be best to change the subject of conversation.
Ruth and her husband, fellow TV presenter Eamonn Holmes, 63, adopted their Collie-cross Maggie 14 years ago from Dog's Trust and she's came to be a huge part of their family, even helping Eamonn with his health struggles over recent years. In 2021, Eamonn opened up about how his pet pup has supported him through his struggles. He told the Telegraph: "I’ve had a lot of illness in the past year.
Dislocated two discs, my right leg was very badly damaged, my sciatic nerve – it’s been tough. And then I got Covid. I like the peace that Maggie brings me." In the same interview, Ruth, who shares son Jack, 21, with husband Eamonn, gushed over Maggie and explained how she is "just adorable" and how she makes her forget her worries.
