Naman Ramachandran The first trailer for “Dasara,” headlined by Telugu cinema star Nani, has been released. The film marks the directorial debut of Srikanth Odela, who previously assisted on hits “Nannaku Prematho” (2016), starring NTR Jr, and “Rangasthalam” (2018), starring Ram Charan. “Dasara” tells the tale of socio economic conditions, political ambitions and power struggles set against the backdrop of the Singareni coal mines in India’s Telengana state. The cast also includes Keerthy Suresh, Dheekshith Shetty, Shine Tom Chacko, Samuthirakani and Sai Kumar. The film has music by Santhosh Narayanan and cinematography by Sathyan Sooryan.

The Oscars’ annual In Memoriam segment on Sunday included a live performance of the song “Calling All Angels” by Lenny Kravitz.

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic “Naatu Naatu” became the first song from a Tollywood film to win best original song at the Oscars, hoofing its way past superstars like Lady Gaga and Rihanna in India’s version of a Cinderella story. The win went to veteran composer M.M. Keeravani, who co-wrote all the songs for the film as well as its score, and lyricist Chandrabose. Their triumph followed a highly energized song-and-dance performance of “Naatu Naatu” that was, by acclamation, one of the highlights of this year’s telecast. Keeravani delighted the audience by giving much of his acceptance speech to the tune of a Carpenters classic.

While Oscar-nominated “Argentina, 1985”  tells a specific story of prosecuting crimes against humanity committed by military dictators in that South American country, its inspirational message is applicable around much of the world: Good people and democracy can triumph over tyranny.The film’s director, Santiago Mitre, told TheWrap that while he wanted to make sure Argentines remember the past and how they overcame a military dictatorship, he also hoped to get that vital message to an international audience. “I think it was necessary for my country to tell the story, and important for the world to watch it because, while we are talking about a particular moment our history, we are also talking about basic freedom and democracy and justice,” he said.

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic On Oscar night, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” will almost certainly win the Academy Award for feature animation. For many of those following along at home, it will look as though the director of “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “The Shape of Water” is being rewarded for some kind of secondary passion, as if del Toro had scaled Everest and then set his sights on a smaller peak on which to plant his flag. But that’s not how it happened at all. Way back in Mexico, del Toro started his filmmaking career doing animated shorts: Obsessed with Ray Harryhausen, the amateur future auteur built rudimentary armatures, painstakingly repositioning the puppets one frame at a time. Decades later, once established in Hollywood, del Toro accepted a side gig at DreamWorks Animation, serving as a story consultant on films such as “Megamind” and “Kung Fu Panda 2” as a pretext for teaching himself the trade. With “Pinocchio,” he put those lessons to work on a stop-motion passion project that’s every bit as challenging as his most impressive films.

Diane Warren and Sofia Carson will perform Warren’s nominated song “Applause” from “Tell It Like a Woman.” Fresh off her Super Bowl Halftime Show appearance, Rihanna will perform her own Original Song nominee “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” And most recently, the organization shared that David Byrne and Son Lux would perform nominated song “This Is a Life,” from “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” with Best Supporting Actress nominee Stephanie Hsu.While it remains unclear if each Best Original Song nominee will be featured with a live version during the Academy Awards ceremony, a person with knowledge of the situation recently told TheWrap that it was likely all the songs would be performed on the show.

The Academy continued its slow rollout of Best Original song performers for the 95th Academy Awards today. After already announcing Rihanna, Sofia Carlson, Dianne Warren and David Byrne, executive producers and showrunners Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner and executive producer Molly McNearney revealed that “Naatu Naatu” from “RRR” will also grace the Oscars stage.
